Glazed Pottery Throughout the Middle and Modern Ages in Northern Spain
A total of forty samples of medieval and modern glazed pottery from northern Spain were studied. Chemical and microstructural analyses of the glazes were performed by scanning electron microscopy coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), while the chemical composition of the pottery bodies and slips were determined by X-ray Fluorescence (XRF). The glazes studied come from the Santa Barbara Hill site (Tudela), the Treviño Castle sit…
Two Sides of the Same Coin
In this study, it is argued that a microhistorical perspective applied to historical archaeologies provides intelligibility to certain mechanisms of exercise of power and forms of resistance in the local sphere. Adopting a microhistorical approach, two primary mechanisms of social order consensus creation and contestation are explored through the creation and negotiation of symbolic capital. Micropolitics are understood as a set of poorly formali…
The study of early medieval European localities and local identities has previously been approached from the perspective of the later emergence of 'classic' medieval towns and cities; the post-Roman centuries have been considered a formative, transitional, period in the emergence of the stable and well-organized settlements of the High Middle Ages. However, new findings and conceptual contributions have been made in recent years, allowing for a r…
Distant cousins and weak interdisciplinarity
The aim of this work is twofold. Firstly, it seeks to reflect on the recent evolution of projects dedicated to the materiality of death in the Early Middle Ages in the Iberian Peninsula from the dual perspective of funerary archaeology and bioarchaeology’s, arguing that both lines of work maintain a form of partial interaction, which could be defined in terms of weak interdisciplinarity. This, in turn, limits the scope of research on the funerary…
What is a village? Agroscapes, collective action and medieval villages in northern Iberia
Why, how and when villages emerged across medieval Europe are enduring questions for archaeologists and historians because of the wider social and economic transformations implied-and because many of these settlements persist to the present day. Most archaeological investigations have focused on the nucleated centres of these communities; here, instead, the authors examine the role of agroscapes. Focusing on an agricultural area near the village …
Landscapes of Agricultural Expansion in the Estuaries of the Basque Coast (Sixteenth-Nineteenth Centuries)
Land reclamation is the process of creating new land from regularly flooded surfaces. This paper explores the role of land reclamation on the historical transformation of estuarine landscapes in the Basque coast (N Spain & SW France) during the Early Modern period (sixteenth-nineteenth centuries). Documentary sources, historical cartography, and field survey are combined to document the main social practices that have shaped polder-like landscape…
First Direct Evidence of Agrarian Practices in the Alava Plateau (Northern Iberia) During the Middle Ages Through Carbon and Nitrogen Stable Isotope Analyses of Charred Seeds
This paper presents the results of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses on 50 charred seed samples from the medieval villages of Zornoztegi and Aistra, dated to between fourth and fourteenth centuries CE. The assemblage was mainly formed by Triticum aestivum/durum, although some Hordeum vulgare, Avena and Vicia ervilia samples were also included. Despite the social and political differences between the sites, no big contrasts were found be…
Uncomfortable Memories and Non-Heritages
The development of historical archaeology in the Iberian Peninsula has opened new and stimulating avenues of research into its most recent times. One of these has been the archaeology of the Carlist Wars, a series of nineteenth-century conflicts related to the overarching process of the emergence of liberal governments in Europe and, contemporarily, of counter-revolutionary movements. This paper will describe recent excavations at Carlist sites i…

Filling the gap
A new archaeology of peasantry has emerged in Europe in the last few decades in the context of development‐led rescue excavations. As a result, new lines of inquiry, usually unconnected with other traditions of Peasant Studies, have been proposed. The main aim of this paper is to propose forms of interaction between current sociological and anthropological perspectives (Peasant Studies) and an archaeologically informed social history approach (Pe…
Monte compartido, monte dividido.
Mountain landscapes reflect the interaction between human groups and their environment. This relation relies on social practices aimed at the appropriation and management of mountain resources, like agriculture, forestry, and husbandry. This paper proposes a reconsideration of mountain landscapes in the Atlantic sector of the Basque Country as highly anthropized spaces, defined by a constant intersection of social actors and practices. The combin…
Magnetic prospection at Aistra (Álava) and Peña Amaya (Burgos)
This article discusses the application and implications of magnetic prospection within two complex early mediaeval sites of the 5th–10th centuries BCE in northern Spain, at Aistra and Peña Amaya in the Upper Ebro Valley. In this period most sites displaying domestic and other forms of occupation present multifaceted and challenging problems due to the poor preservation of stratigraphic relationships in rural contexts and rarity and poor visibilit…

Social Inequality in Early Medieval Europe
Pertenecer y diferenciarse.
Medieval rural landscapes and social change in Northern Spain
In this paper, anthracological and palynological records of the Medieval deserted village of Zaballa in Alava (Basque Country, Northern Spain) are used to examine the transformation of rural landscapes. At this site, a large-scale archaeological project was carried out and a long period of occupation (6 th -16 th century) discovered. A good range of bioarchaeological and geoarchaeological evidence was also found. Archaeobotanical remains provided…
Social history of agriculture at medieval rural sites in the northern of the Iberia Peninsula
Archaeology of early medieval peasantry in the Basque Country
The aim of this paper is to analyse early medieval economic trends and social change in the Basque Country, using a bottom-up approach that includes multiproxy archaeological evidence. Though comparisons will be made with other Northern Iberian areas, the study focuses on the 3,000 km2 Basque province of Álava, where research has been intense in the last decade. The work primarily relies on records of settlement patterns, paleoenvironmental evide…
An archaeology of “small worlds”
This paper uses the archaeological record to analyse the forms of social inequality that existed within early medieval rural communities. The paper takes as its case study Álava, where there is a significant density of high- resolution archaeological records, making it possible to compare the nature of the changes that took place within various peasant communities, and explore their interactions with active domain structures at the local and supr…
Reconstructing past terraced agrarian landscapes in the Ebro valley
The historical agrarian landscape features of the deserted medieval village of Torrentejo (Ebro Valley, southern Basque Country, Rioja Alavesa region) are presented here. This study relies on analyses of agricultural lands on terraces and, secondarily, of domestic occupation, funerary spaces, and of a medieval church. An archaeological excavation was carried out around the church, covering 800 m 2 , and exposing more than 2 m of archaeological de…

Peasant economy in Late Roman Alava
Zornoztegi is a rural settlement located in the Alava plateau (Basque Country, Spain), and it was occupied between the Bronze Age and the Late Middle Ages. During a recent archaeological project, a small settlement consisting of two dwellings dated to the 4th-5th centuries was found. The archaeological evidence suggests that this site was probably a small rural settlement dependent on a higher rural centre, perhaps a Roman villa. In this paper, t…
