  • A Theologian's Consideration of Global Warming

    Open Access•William R Myers•ARTICLE•Theology Today•2024

Using resources provided by the Bible, tradition, experience, and reason, a close look at magazine articles from the 2023 summer considers the reality of global warming. Scientists exploring a lake's strata, Canadian wildfires, phosphorous runoff, algal blooms, and Phoenix's string of high temperatures suggest we have entered the Anthropocene Era. The idea of domination borrowed from the first chapter of Genesis coupled with Aristotle's Great Cha…

  • America's Christian Nationalism, Theological Anomalies, and Constructive Responses

    Open Access•William R Myers•ARTICLE•Theology Today•2023

From both the political right and left, the Charlottesville March re-awakened American interest in theocracy. American Christians became interested in something called Christian Nationalism. America's theocratic ideas had surfaced during American colonialism and later as the Protestant church operationalized a theocratic formational process called Christian nurture. That theological idea became an unhelpful, theocratic, theological anomaly. In si…

  • Following Trump

    Open Access•William R Myers•ARTICLE•Theology Today•2019•Cited by: 3

This article traces how premillennial theology replaced postmillennialism and prepared the way for evangelical identification with Trump’s negative worldview. It suggests, following The Altars Where We Worship, multiple ways postmodern humans meet basic human impulses. It details how such “altars” end up serving in markedly religious ways. Using Ninian Smart’s seven categories, it suggests how Trump and those who follow him fit what might be a “n…

  • John Dewey, God, and the religious education of the American public

    Open Access•William R Myers•ARTICLE•Theology Today•2017

American philosopher John Dewey (1859–1953) wanted to change the way we understand the world. Born just prior to our Civil War, Dewey is a telling figure as the authority of a premodern day gave way to the progressive promise of modernity. In this regard, Dewey's family, church, college, academic, and peer relationships are considered. The article notes the “new” pedagogy of the Laboratory School (founded by Dewey and his wife at the University o…

  • Erik H. Erikson and the deep context of ministry

    Open Access•William R Myers•ARTICLE•Theology Today•2016

Erikson described how we adopt childhood moralities that we often carry into adulthood. He suggested a strong spiritual interconnection between what happens, or does not happen in this regard among infancy, adolescence, and mature adulthood. The mature adult’s ethical responsibility within generational interplay is described. The ethical adult’s ability to face death without dread is described. The question of Erikson’s personal ties to Christian…
