  • How Much Is ‘Care’ Valued in South Korea

Minyi Song, Jeong-Han Kang et al.•ARTICLE•Korean Journal of Sociology•2024

  • Toward Narrative-Driven Data Mining in the Post-Truth Age

    Jeong-Han Kang, Jeong‐han Kang et al.•ARTICLE•Korean Journal of Sociology•2023

  • How to Detect Priority of Social Issues by Randomized Paired Comparison in a Survey Experiment

JeongJae Lim, Ji Yeon Jo et al.•ARTICLE•Korean Journal of Sociology•2021

  • Group cues and public opposition to immigration

    Shang E Ha, Soo Jin Cho et al.•ARTICLE•New Community•2016•Cited by: 13•References: 34

One view in the study of attitudes towards immigration is that public reactions depend on who the immigrants are. Using a survey experiment, we confirm that group cues matter: South Koreans are more likely to support liberal immigration policies, when immigrants are framed as North Korean defectors (coethnic group). When other groups cues—Korean Chinese (semi-coethnic group) or guest-workers from Indonesia (non-coethnic group)—are given, the leve…

  • Trends and Correlates of Consenting to Provide Social Security Numbers

    Open Access•Jibum Kim, Hee-Choon Shin et al.•ARTICLE•CAM•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Privacy and confidentiality are often of great concern to respondents answering sensitive questions posed by interviewers. Using the 1993-2010 General Social Survey, we examined trends in the provision of social security numbers (SSNs) and correlates of those responses. Results indicate that the rate of SSN provision has declined over the past three decades, that is, from about 60% in 1993-1994 to 20% after 2004. Although younger, unmarried, and …

  • How Do Cultural Classes Emerge from Assimilation and Distinction? An Extension of the Cucker-Smale Flocking Model

    Jeong-Han Kang, Jeong‐han Kang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•2013•References: 14

When cultural tastes are not neutral but hierarchically matched to social status, people assimilate themselves to higher status by consuming cultural goods while distinguishing themselves from lower status by developing new tastes. Extending the Cucker-Smale model for mutual influence among agents, we examine when and how many cultural classes emerge from continuous distributions of tastes and what conditions those classes satisfy, through the as…

  • A Theory of Innovation

Nee, Victor Nee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2010

The aim of this paper is to specify a theory to explain why transitions to a market economy cause a shift to a higher level of innovation. Marketization increases the power of economic actors relative to political actors, increases inter-firm competition, creates new opportunities for entrepreneurship, and subsequently motivates innovative activity. For our empirical application, we focus on China's transition economy, which offers a broad range …

  • Comparison between Self-administered Questionnaire and Computer-assisted Self-interview for Supplemental Survey Nonresponse

    Open Access•Jibum Kim, Jeong-Han Kang et al.•ARTICLE•CAM•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This article examines the correlates of nonresponse for self-administered questionnaire (SAQ) sections by comparing two General Social Survey (GSS) years, 2000 and 2002, during which the GSS switched the paper-and-pencil personal interview (PAPI) and SAQ to the computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) and computer-assisted self-administered interview (CASI) format. The authors find that CASI not only lowers the supplemental response rate but a…

  • Confidence in Religious Leaders in Korea

    Open Access•Jibum Kim, Sang-Wook Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 17

Korea may provide an important testing ground for assessing religious growth as a correlate of religious authority. In Korea from 1985 to 1995, all religious groups experienced growth, but from 1995 to 2005 only the Catholic population did so. Favorable images of Korean Catholicism compared to other Korean religions point to one factor that may account for this trend, namely, confidence in religious leaders. Up to now there has been no empirical …

  • The Usefulness and Uselessness of the Decomposition of Tobit Coefficients

    Open Access•Jeong-Han Kang, Jeong‐han Kang•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 17

McDonald and Moffitt's (1980) decomposition method for Tobit coefficients disaggregates the total changes in a censored outcome variable into the changes in the probability of attaining noncensored values and the changes in the noncensored values themselves. McDonald and Moffitt, however, did not highlight two limitations of this decomposition, and sociological applications of the Tobit decomposition that do not acknowledge these limitations have…
