  • Telephone Service Interruption Weighting Adjustments for State Health Insurance Surveys

Open Access•Michael Davern, James M Lepkowski et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2004

Many states rely on telephone surveys to produce estimates of uninsurance. To the extent that people in households without telephones differ from those living in households with telephones, estimates will be biased due to lack of coverage of those in households without telephones. We find the disparity in estimates of uninsurance in the Current Population Survey (all people vs. those living in households without telephones) shows a similar associ…

  • Local Factors Affecting the Tendency to Bypass Local Hospitals for Inpatient Mental Health Care

Open Access•Raymond L Goldsteen, David Falcone et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•1994

Using the records of 2,171 rural residents of Illinois who received inpatient treatment for mental illness or substance abuse, this paper examines factors that influence the tendency to seek service from a distant rather than a local hospital. Results indicate that the age and insurance coverage of the individual, the per capita income of the community area, surrogates for the service orientation of the local hospital and the proximity of the pat…

  • Examining the Relationship between Health Locus of Control and the Use of Medical Care Services

Open Access•Raymond L Goldsteen, Michael A Counte et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•1994

Health locus of control, the extent to which one believes he or she can affect his or her health status, usually is viewed as one of the factors that predisposes individuals to use medical services. However, some social theorists outside the area of utilization studies suggest that locus of control beliefs also are consequences of health-related behaviors and events such as utilization. The authors address this issue by investigating the relation…

  • Trust and Its Relationship to Psychological Distress

    Raymond L Goldsteen, Karen Goldsteen et al.•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•1992•Cited by: 3•References: 8

In this paper, we report on a study of the relationship between trust and psychological distress in a community near Three Mile Island (TMI). Trust is defined as the expectation that others will honor agreements, either implicit or explicit. Evaluation of a path model indicated that mistrust of authorities associated with the accident was directly related to perceptions of danger and harm to health and indirectly related to distress through these…

  • The engine or the caboose

Open Access•Raymond L Goldsteen, Júlio César Rodrigues Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Saúde Pública•1990

A discussion of health policy in developing countries is presented. It argues that developing countries must adopt a progressive approach to health policy which rejects the two-tiered system of public and private health care. However, it also points out that ideology is not sufficient to maintain support. A progressive health system must utilize administrative and social and behavioral sciences to achieve effectiveness and efficiency in health ca…

  • An investigation into support for restrictions on HIV carriers in the Chicago metropolitan area

    Open Access•Raymond L Goldsteen, Karen Goldsteen•ARTICLE•Revista de Saúde Pública•1990•References: 7

An investigation into support for restrictions on people testing seropositive for HIV is reported on. Data were collected during telephone interviews with two-hundred adults aged eighteen to sixty-five in the Chicago metropolitan area. Using the analytic technique of LISREL, six models which attempt to explain support for restrictions were tested. It was found that the model best supported by the data indicates that two groups contribute to suppo…

  • The Perceived Burden of Children

    Open Access•Karen Goldsteen, Catherine E Ro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•1989•Cited by: 16•References: 19

We expect that mothers vary in the degree to which they perceive their children as burdensome, and that this variation may help explain why past research on the effect of children on mothers' psychological distress often finds insignificant or inconsistent effects: mothers who feel their children are a burden may have high distress levels compared with mothers who do not feel burdened. We find that mothers experience their children as differentia…
