Tenseless clausal coordination and the system of tense marking in Korean
Taking Chung’s (2001. The structure and tense interpretation of tenseless - ko coordination. Studies in Generative Grammar 11. 41–68, 2005. What does bare - ko coordination say about post-verbal morphology in Korean? Lingua 115. 549–568) discussion as a point of departure, I discuss the phenomenon of tenseless clausal coordination in Korean. I investigate the phenomenon from a broader perspective concerning the system of tense marking and tempora…
The Comparative Syntax of Evidential Markers in Korean and Japanese
The cartographic project, initiated by Rizzi (1997, 2004, 2013) and Cinque (1999, 2004, 2006), among others, aims to provide a detailed map of clause structure for human language. The core proposal is that the traditional TP and CP consist of a hierarchy of functional projections that is supposed to be universal across languages. Recently, building on Cinque (2004), An (2022a) shows that evidential markers in Korean and Italian, namely, pota and …

A comparative syntax of the formal politeness markers in Japanese and Korean
Taking Miyagawa’s (2022. Syntax in the treetops . Cambridge, MA: MIT Press) discussion as a point of departure, I examine the properties of the formal politeness markers in Japanese and Korean, namely, - mas /- des and - (su)pni . Besides being markers of formal politeness (or allocutive agreement), these elements are parallel in that they are all limited to Emonds’ (1970. Root and structure-preserving transformations . Ph.D. dissertation, MIT) r…
A Cartographic Approach To The Right Periphery
The cartographic project aims at drawing a map of clause structure that is as precise and as detailed as possible (Cinque 1999, 2004, Rizzi 1997, among many others). In this paper, I focus on the distribution of heads in the right periphery in Korean that I argue provides a direct window into the clausal architecture of the language. Taking as a starting point Cinque's (2004) discussion on the Italian verb sembrare in the context of clitic climbi…
Clause types, intonation and stranded embedded clauses
In this paper, I examine the properties of a construction in Korean speech that has not received much attention in the literature. I refer to the construction in question as the ‘stranded embedded clause’ (SEC). SECs are a special type of echoed utterance, where an utterance in the form of an embedded clause is repeated for various reasons. The characteristic properties of the SEC involve the fact that there can be a mismatch between the type of …
Reduced NP comparatives in Korean and their implications
On Certain Adjacency Effects in Ellipsis Contexts
In this article, I show that crosslinguistically, there is a recurring pattern in various ellipsis constructions (e.g., fragment answers, right-dislocation, right-node raising, VP-ellipsis), to the effect that parts of a remnant can be additionally deleted under adjacency to a deletion site, often ignoring constituency. I argue that the phenomenon in question follows from the fact that PF deletion, being an operation in the component determining …

Clauses in Noncanonical Positions at the Syntax-Phonology Interface
In this paper, I discuss the distribution of null complementizer clauses in English. I argue that two factors are interwoven to yield the observed distribution: first, unlike what is standardly assumed, not only the emptiness of C but also that of Spec,CP matters; second, the relevant clauses are obligatorily parsed as separate intonational phrases. I show that these properties lead to a new generalization that can be derived from independent ass…
