The status of verbal theme vowels in contemporary linguistic theorizing
Contemporary theoretical approaches to morphology have devoted considerable attention to verbal theme vowels, i.e., the issue of whether they can be shown to possess identifiable syntactic or semantic properties. The position that theme vowels are items without syntactic or semantic import has profound theoretical consequences, entailing the existence of an autonomous component of Grammar dedicated to Morphology (Aronoff 1994, Anderson 1992, Embi…
Language Use and Linguistic Structure
The editors are grateful to all those who have helped make the fifth volume of the Proceedings of the Olomouc Linguistics Colloquium (and the ninth volume in the whole series) a reality.Above all, as always, we would like to thank all the authors for both their enthusiastic participation in the conference and their cooperation in the time-consuming editorial process. We would also like to express our immense gratitude to all the reviewers who devo…
Scope freezing and object shift in Ukrainian
This remark presents novel evidence on Ukrainian specificity-inducing object shift in its interaction with quantifier scope, evidence suggesting a generalization that whatever scope interpretations are established in the postverbal field will carry over into the preverbal field. We point out that the data present a serious challenge to the Superiority account of scope freezing, since that account predicts that object shift of a QP will always fre…
Superiority and Scope Freezing
David Lebeaux (cited in Larson 1990:603) observes that English double object constructions (DOCs) show “scope freezing” between the two objects. Quantified indirect and direct object arguments must be interpreted in their surface order (1a). Schneider-Zioga (1988) makes a similar observation about quantified arguments in the with-variant of spray-load constructions (1b); they also exhibit scope freezing. As noted in Larson 1990, scope freezing doe…
