Mismatches and Mitigation at CS-PF Interface
Taking the domain of polar questions in Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian (BCMS) as the empirical background, the paper probes into the syntax-phonology (CS-PF) interface and discusses insertion and movement as PF-repair strategies mitigating against the lack of convergence at PF. Contra previous accounts, the analysis treats li (lexicalization of Q) as a 'run-of-the-mill' 2P clitic in BCMS, whose host cannot always be provided by syntax. I pr…
In the south slavonic garden
This paper deals with morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of the so-called Cognate Object Construction with particular reference to Serbo-Croatian and Slovene. The relevance of an examination of such morphologically robust languages is manifold. It facilitates an understanding of some of the puzzling properties of the construction cross linguistically, offers a way of explaining the noted disagreement regarding judgments fou…
Mistaking For
This article investigates the validity of the theory of mediated predication by examining one of the proposed overt realizations of Pred0. Taking the law of parsimony as our starting position and using evidence from English, Russian, and Serbo-Croatian, we argue that the element that looks like the preposition 'for' is, in fact, a preposition (not Pred0), and we show how it explains the syntax and the semantics of the relevant 'for' sequences. Ca…
Bound‐Variable Anaphora and Left Branch Condition
Rules that govern the cooccurences of theta-clusters in the ‘Theta-System’
0. Introduction In order to be legible to the CS, thematic roles in the ‘Theta-System’ (Reinhart, this volume) are formally coded in terms of two binary features: +/−c (cause change) and +/−m (mental state)
