  • Critical Analysis of the van Bemmelen Conversion Factor used to Convert Soil Organic Matter Data to Soil Organic Carbon Data

    Open Access•Lee Heaton, Michael A Fullen et al.•ARTICLE•Espaço Aberto•2016•Cited by: 1

Converting soil organic matter (SOM) data to soil organic carbon (SOC) data usually uses the van Bemmelen factor of 0.58 (or in reverse its reciprocal of 1.724) as a universal conversion factor. The accuracy of this conversion factor has been questioned. Under the Kyoto Protocol (1997) dry combustion is recommended to provide reproducible analyses to measure soil carbon stocks. However, dry combustion equipment is expensive and entails high maint…

  • Agro-environmental Sustainability of the Yuanyang Rice Terraces of Yunnan Province, China

    Open Access•Michael A Fullen•ARTICLE•Espaço Aberto•2014

  • Land rehabilitation with the use of biological geotextiles, in two different countries

Open Access•Antonio Jose Teixeira Guerra, José Fernando Rodrigues Bezerra et al.•ARTICLE•Sociedade & natureza•2010•References: 8

This paper assesses the role of biological geotextiles on non-agricultural erosion environments, based on studies in the mine tailings Gauteng Province (South Africa) and urban area of São Luis City (Brazil). Gauteng Province (South Africa) has suffered immense problems related to sustainable rehabilitation of mine dumps. This is a huge challenge, as wastes are highly susceptible to both water and wind erosion. Establishing a grass cover to reduc…

  • The development of sustainble cropping systems in the highlands of South-East Asia

    Open Access•Michael A Fullen•ARTICLE•Sociedade & natureza•2005

Soil conservation in the highlands of South-East Asia is essential for sustainable agro-environmental development. The effectiveness of soil conservation treatments developed in runoff plots was investigated in farmer-managed plots on a natural catchment. This was achieved by the development and scientific evaluation of modified and novel cropping practices in a representative highland catchment in Yunnan Province, China. Wang Jia Catchment cover…

  • Erosion of arable soils in Britain

    Michael A Fullen•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1985

Changing perspectives on erosion problems on British arable soils are reviewed. Current agricultural practices are increasing the magnitude and extent of soil erosion in Britain and other parts of Europe. Current trends in soil erosion research are examined, in particular recent field survey developments and the potential value of radar‐satellite based monitoring of erosive weather systems. More attention should be devoted to assessing levels of …
