Before and After Humboldt: European Universities Between the Eighteenth and the Nineteenth Centuries
This chapter argues that the centralized, state-directed, utilitarian university was a powerful form, which survived more or less intact from the Enlightenment to the later nineteenth century. As public institutions of intense interest to governing elites, the history of European universities cannot be detached from the wider political, social, religious, and intellectual currents of the age. Fritz Ringer was surely right in seeing the 1860s as a…

The University of Edinburgh: An Illustrated History
From a small city college in the sixteenth century the University of Edinburgh grew to be one of the world's greatest centres of scholarship, research and learning. Its history is told here by three of its leading historians with wit, verve and style. Copiously illustrated in colour and black and white, this is a book for everyone concerned with the university or the city of Edinburgh to read and enjoy. The authors consider the impacts of Reforma…
The Efficient Organisation of Public Intellect: Lyon Playfair and Scottish Education
Lyon Playfair was a champion of scientific and technical education who was professor of chemistry at Edinburgh University before serving as a Liberal M.P., initially for a Scottish university seat, from 1868 to 1892. This article looks mainly at his role in debates on the Education Act of 1872 and the bills which preceded it. Playfair sought to define the democratic traditions of Scottish education, especially emphasising the legacy of John Knox,…
When reliance on religion falters: Religious coping and post-traumatic stress symptoms in older adults after multiple disasters
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina brought devastating losses to Gulf Coast communities. In this study, Katrina survivors answered open-ended questions about coping with hurricane-related challenges. The sample was partitioned into low and high scorers on a non-organizational religiosity scale. Content analyses revealed that low scorers described secular strategies, relied less on a church community in the aftermath of the storms, and exhibited active re…
The Edinburgh History of Education in Scotland
Leading historians discuss the distinctive and internationally significant history of Scottish education The distinctiveness and influence of Scotland’s educational institutions have played a significant role in the construction of national identity. This book investigates the origins and evolution of the main institutions of Scottish education, bringing together a range of scholars, each an expert on his or her own period, and with interests inc…
University History Teaching, National Identity and Unionism in Scotland, 1862–1914
In the nineteenth century nationalism and historiography were closely linked, and the absence of separatist nationalism in Scotland had consequences for academic history. This article looks at the content of university history teaching, using sources such as lecture notes, textbooks, and inaugural lectures. The nature of the Scottish curriculum made the Ordinary survey courses more significant than specialised Honours teaching. While chairs of ge…
Centralisation and decentralisation in the training of elites in current France and Great-Britain

Educating Women: Schooling and Identity in England and France 1800-1867
Christina de Bellaigue's comparative study of girls’ schooling in England and France focuses on private schools for the middle classes, especially boarding schools. Using a very wide range of sources, she discusses the nature of schooling itself, the careers and ideals of the teachers, and the experiences, both social and intellectual, of the pupils. The comparative approach makes for many insights into the educational ideals of the two countries…

Our Friend 'The Enemy: Elite Education in Britain and Germany before World War I
Thomas Weber here compares two élite universities, Oxford and Heidelberg, in the generation before 1914. This is a ‘transnational’ as well as a comparative study, studying interaction between the two countries, and asking questions about each university suggested by studying the other. Oxford's role as a nursery of the national élite is obvious, but Heidelberg's is less so, given the German practice of circulating between universities—Heidelberg,…

Academic Charisma and the Origins of the Research University
THIS is an odd book’, says William Clark in his first sentence. ‘It traces the development of the academic from medieval forms up to modern incarnations.’ Although there is no subtitle to indicate it, Clark's book is at heart a study of German universities, mainly in Protestant states, in the early modern period, and it does not fully live up to its author's ambitious claim. Many of the chapters have already appeared in earlier versions, usually …

Die Universitat Greifswald und die deutsche Hochschullandschaft im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert * 200 Jahre Wirtschafts- und Staatswissenschaften an der Eberhard-Karls-Universitat Tubingen: Leben und Werk …
The University of Greifswald, on the Baltic coast, is one of the smaller and less well-known German universities. For centuries it was under Swedish control, until Pomerania became part of Prussia in 1815. The collection of essays edited by Werner Buchhholz is the result of a colloquium which sought to place Greifswald within the historical development of the Prussian university ‘landscape’, and is therefore of more than local interest. It relate…
