  • Principal component analysis and fuzzy clustering for neighborhood-scale urban morphology-based thermal hazard assessment

Open Access•Abdurrahman Zaki, Patrycja Przewoźna et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2026

Urban heat islands pose significant public health concerns, yet neighborhood-scale thermal assessment faces data limitations. Satellite-derived surface temperatures provide spatially complete coverage but measure surface radiative properties rather than pedestrian-level air temperature. Meanwhile, sparse meteorological networks cannot resolve intra-urban heterogeneity. Morphology-based approaches address this gap by using urban form characteristi…

  • Is this drama called populism? A comparison of protagonists, allies, antagonists, and victims in the narratives of Polish and Hungarian energy experts

    Open Access•Krzysztof Maczka, Zuzanna Kurowska et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2026•References: 32

The European Union's (EU) energy transition (ET) agenda has driven profound socio-technical changes while intensifying political contestation. Poland and Hungary provide a revealing comparative perspective: both are post-communist member states characterized by prominent right-wing populist narratives, yet they differ in energy mixes and dependence on external suppliers. We used a dramaturgical heuristic inspired by Shakespeare's five-act structu…

According to the World Health Organization, 36 out of the 50 most polluted cities in the EU in 2018 were in Poland. In response to public pressure and supranational obligations, the state-led, household-oriented energy retrofit Clean Air Priority Program (CAPP) was launched in 2018. We investigate how the Polish state, local actors, and market organizations within this program dynamically compete and cooperate to enforce their agendas. Using in-d…

  • Narratives on cutting down trees on private land. A comparison of urban and rural municipalities in Poland using the Q-deliberation method

  • Effectiveness of CCTV systems as a crime preventive tool

Piotr Matczak, Andrzej Wójtowicz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 34

Based on data from eight Polish cities, we tested if closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring systems are effective in crime reduction and if the CCTV monitoring effects are durable. In a quasi-experimental method, we applied police data about four types of crime incidents in 2005–2014 as well as camera location. A preventive effect appeared in 10 of 17 of analysed paired treatment/comparison areas. The overall mean effect appears modest. In t…

  • Ranking ecosystem services delivered by trees in urban and rural areas

Open Access•Patrycja Przewoźna, Krzysztof Maczka et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 45

Policies and strategies for tree management and protection on a national, regional, and local level have not sufficiently considered differences between rural and urban areas. We used expert knowledge to compare rural and urban areas in a case study evaluating the relative importance of ecosystem services (ES) in policy development. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and focus group discussions were used to rank 17 ES, representing four classes…

  • Conflicts in Ecosystem Services Management

    Open Access•Krzysztof Maczka, Piotr Matczak et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 15

The relationship between specific ecosystem services (ES) and different types of conflicts are explored to aid understanding of the barriers to effective biodiversity conservation management. Drawing from conflict theory, content analysis is undertaken of public documents generated during consultations about Natura 2000 management that were conducted in Poland between 2010−2015. Results show the links between conflict over conservation planning a…

  • Temperature Forecast Accuracies of Polish Proverbs

Piotr Matczak, Dariusz Graczyk et al.•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2020

Proverbs are a part of traditional knowledge that has been increasingly acknowledged to be a valuable source of information for environmental policies. Proverbs on weather convey the cumulated experience of generations that provide guidelines for agricultural practices, everyday decisions, and other situations. Besides the value the proverbs have in their cultural setting, they also serve as an indicator of objective meteorological patterns. This…

  • Approaches to state flood recovery funding in Visegrad Group Countries

    Open Access•Lenka Slavíková, Pavel Raška et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Hazards•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Flood recovery is an important period in the flood risk management cycle. Recently, flood recovery has become viewed as an opportunity for future flood damage mitigation. Financial flows to cover flood damages and rules regarding their allocation are crucial for supporting or undermining mitigation efforts. In this paper, we map and compare state flood recovery funding in the so-called Visegrad Group Countries (V4), i.e. Czechia, Hungary, Poland …

  • Evolution of civil security systems

Věra-Karin Brázová, Vera Karin Brazova et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2014•References: 6

National civil security systems (CSSs) are powerful risk management tools. They do, however, sometimes fail to adjust, as e.g. the Fukushima disaster demonstrates. Understanding the (mal)adaptation of CSSs is thus crucial. Yet, comprehensive analyses of the evolution of CSSs are not common. It is the aim of this paper to fill this gap and, more importantly, to identify the main causes of changes. This paper investigates how the CSSs of the Centra…

Temperature projections indicate further warming, but models do not agree as to seasonal distribution of changes in precipitation. This article reviews evidence for climate change and its impacts in Poland, in the context of observations and projections. It also reviews va…
