  • Climate Garden 2085

    Open Access•Juanita Schlaepfer-Miller, Christoph Kueffer et al.•ARTICLE•Environment Development and…•2023

Climate change education is inherently part of Education for Sustainable Development which has manifold aims to develop transformative learning from primary to tertiary pupils. Climate change is challenging as a school subject, as although it can improve pupils’ knowledge, it is less evident how such knowledge translates into decreasing the value-action gap. Climate change also transverses disciplinary boundaries and teachers struggle to incorpor…

  • Using the "regime shift" concept in addressing social-ecological change

    Open Access•Christian Kull, Christoph Kueffer et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Research•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 111

Regime shift' has emerged as a key concept in the environmental sciences. The concept has roots in complexity science and its ecological applications, and is increasingly applied to intertwined social and ecological phenomena. Yet what exactly is a regime shift? We explore this question at three nested levels. First, we propose a broad, contingent, multi-perspective epistemological basis for the concept, seeking to build bridges between its compl…

MIREN tackles one such “glocal” (global/local) environmental problem – plant invasions in mountains – through a transdisciplinary, multi-scale learning process at the science-policy interface. The approach led to a new framing of invas…

  • Plant Invasions in Mountains

Open Access•Keith L McDougall, Anzar Ahmad Khuroo et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2011

Mountains are one of few ecosystems little affected by plant invasions. However, the threat of invasion is likely to increase because of climate change, greater anthropogenic land use, and continuing novel introductions. Preventive management, therefore, will be crucial but can be difficult to promote when more pressing problems are unresolved and predictions are uncertain. In this essay, we use management case studies from 7 mountain regions to …

  • Integrative Ecological Research

    Christoph Kueffer•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2006

Taking ecology as an example, I discuss the contribution of a disciplinary natural science to environmental problem solving. Ecological theory has so far been of limited use for environmental management. I present an ecological research strategy that may be termed integrative ecological research. It seeks to explain the complexity of specific field or real-world situations. I argue that such research should be viewed as complementary to other typ…

  • Towards a Publication Culture in Transdisciplinary Research

Christoph Kueffer, Gertrude Hirsch Hadorn et al.•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2007

Over the past few decades, many researchers have concluded that adequately addressing issues in the knowledge society requires a major transformation of research, away from disengaged disciplines toward socially engaged, transdisciplinary approaches. To date, knowledge exchange between transdisciplinarity researchers via academic publications has been modest. Developing a common strategy about which journals are appropriate for publishing differe…
