  • Is the city centre synonymous with (non-)cooperative innovation? Innovation in Knowledge -Intensive Services through intra-metropolitan space of Mexico City

    Open Access•Luis E Santiago, Alejandro Sánchez-Zárate et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2026

Innovation in Knowledge-Intensive Services (KIS) holds a central position in the global economy. Innovation developed by KIS can occur in either a cooperative or non-cooperative mode with other economic agents. The cooperative mode has traditionally been associated with the central area of the city, while the non-cooperative mode has been linked to the urban periphery, where KIS presumably finds favourable conditions for their innovative activiti…

    Open Access•Margarita Santiago García, Luis E Santiago•ARTICLE•Economía Sociedad y Territorio•2023•References: 2

    Open Access•Luis E Santiago•ARTICLE•Economía Sociedad y Territorio•2023•References: 1

  • Developing a growth and yield model for planted big-leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) at advanced age in subtropical moist forest in Puerto Rico

    Open Access•Jimena Forero-Montaña, Jimena Forero‐Montaña et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2021

The ability to predict growth and potential yield is essential for planning forest management. Here we developed a narrow size-class diameter model to simulate growth in a mature plantation (age 42 years) of big-leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) in a subtropical moist forest in Puerto Rico. We calculated optimal rotation age by means of the biological and economic criteria. The analyses involved diameter measurements over 31 years and a …

  • Are Knowledge-Intensive Services an Urban Growth Factor in the Global Periphery? (Un)Fulfilled Possibilities in the Large Metropolitan Areas of Mexico

    Open Access•Boris Graizbord, Luis E Santiago•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2020•References: 14

In this paper, we analyze the labor productivity of “knowledge-intensive services” (KIS) located in the four larger metropolitan areas in Mexico. We discuss the accepted explanation to why big cities concentrate the best and most qualified jobs and activities that generate innovative and technological change and therefore labor productivity. In Mexico this is the case for some knowledge-intensive sectors, but some paradoxes emerge when services a…

  • The impact of extreme weather events on community risk planning and management

Open Access•Luis E Santiago, Luis Santiago et al.•ARTICLE•urbe Revista Brasileira de Gestão…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Top-down technical or engineered solutions to deal with flood control such as channelization are increasingly unaffordable. We explored how community leaders' frame the concept of risk, particularly due to flooding, and documented bottom-up rather than top-down solutions within the context of Hurricane Maria and the current financial crisis. This research aimed to interview environmental conservation organizational leaders to assess the broader q…
