  • A Late Chalcolithic–Early Bronze Age I Tomb from the Khaybar Region, Saudi Arabia

  • Northern exposure

Open Access•José Ángel Garrido-Cordero, Rita Loureiro et al.•ARTICLE•Trabajos de Prehistoria•2025

This study re-examines the personal adornment assemblage from the Bela Vista tholos (Sintra, Portugal), highlighting the rediscovery of a long-lost amber bead and clarifying the chronology and provenance of associated artifacts. The bead has been identified as Baltic amber through the use of FTIR spectroscopy. This material is known to be exceptionally rare in Iberian contexts prior to the Bronze Age. Complementary analyses (MACLAS and VORTEX) li…

  • A forest of green beads

    Open Access•Daniel Sánchez-Gómez, José Ángel Garrido-Cordero et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2025•References: 4

This study addresses critical gaps in the provenance analysis of variscite and related green phosphate minerals, which serve as key tracers of prehistoric socio-economic networks in Late Prehistoric Europe (c. 6000–1200 BC). Despite their significance, existing provenance models are limited by small, unrepresentative datasets, outdated data processing techniques, and a lack of robust validation metrics. These limitations hinder the accurate recon…

  • Amber provenance as a Chrono-Cultural Proxy

    Open Access•José Ángel Garrido-Cordero, Carlos P Odriozola et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•References: 4

In recent years, significant advancements have occurred in our comprehension of amber consumption patterns in the Iberian Peninsula. This progress stems from the increasing volume of FTIR data related to both archaeological and geological amber. Consequently, a chronological model has been established, delineating amber consumption in the Iberian Peninsula from the Late Paleolithic to the Iron Age. Broadly, local amber consumption has been minima…

  • Crafting illusions

    Open Access•Carlos P Odriozola, José Ángel Garrido-Cordero et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2024•References: 3

The discovery of a set of beads, comprising both Sicilian amber and resin-coated beads in the Middle Bronze Age burial site of Cova del Gegant (Sitges, Barcelona, Spain), has sparked inquiries into whether the coating was intended for imitation or counterfeiting of amber. We assert that human-made materials, such as bead coatings, are intentionally conceived, designed, and crafted to fulfill specific functions. Thus, for an object to effectively …

  • Unlocking archaeological data online via the Pepadb (Prehistoric Europe's Personal Adornment Database) initiative for Open Science

PEPAdb (Prehistoric Europe's Personal Adornment Database) is a long-term, open-ended project that aims to improve access to archaeological data online. Its website ( https://pepadb.us.es ) publishes and analyses datasets about prehistoric personal adornment, drawing on the results of various research projects and bibliographic references

  • Shine on you crazy diamond

    Open Access•José Ángel Garrido-Cordero, Carlos P Odriozola et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2021

Fluorite ornaments have been recorded in different sites of Europe since Upper Paleolithic. Due to its visual appearance and physical properties, some translucent or transparent mineralogies like fluorite were searched for or casually acquired by late prehistory’s human communities. After intensive research on archaeological contexts from the Iberian Peninsula with personal ornaments from 4th to 2nd millennia BCE, we have recently identified and …

  • The stone beads from Barrada’s hypogeum 1 (Aljezur, Algarve, Portugal). Greenstone distribution patterns in the Iberian Southwest late Neolithic

    Open Access•Carlos P Odriozola, José Ángel Garrido-Cordero et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2020
