  • Analysis, Integration and Modeling of the Earth System (Aimes)

Open Access•David Schimel, Kathy Hibbard et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropocene•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 29

The IGBP Analysis, Integration and Modeling of the Earth System (AIMES) project has developed the notion of Earth System Science (ESS). ESS studies how the planet operates as a coupled system of interacting components, which produce emergent behaviors over and beyond the dynamics of the individual components. Many climate models used in the IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5) include representations of the physical climate system and the biologica…

  • Developing an Integrated History and future of People on Earth (Ihope)

Open Access•R Costanza, Sander Van Der Leeuw et al.•ARTICLE•Current Opinion in Environmental…•2012•Cited by: 17•References: 19

  • Harmonization of land-use scenarios for the period 1500–2100

    Open Access•G C Hurtt, Louise Chini et al.•ARTICLE•Climatic Change•2011

In preparation for the fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the international community is developing new advanced Earth System Models (ESMs) to assess the combined effects of human activities (e.g. land use and fossil fuel emissions) on the carbon-climate system. In addition, four Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios of the future (2005–2100) are being provided by four Integrated …

  • The representative concentration pathways

Open Access•Detlef P Van Vuuren, Jae Edmonds et al.•ARTICLE•Climatic Change•2011

This paper summarizes the development process and main characteristics of the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), a set of four new pathways developed for the climate modeling community as a basis for long-term and near-term modeling experiments. The four RCPs together span the range of year 2100 radiative forcing values found in the open literature, i.e. from 2.6 to 8.5 W/m 2 . The RCPs are the product of an innovative collaboration be…

  • Toward an Integrated History to Guide the Future

    Open Access•Sander Van Der Leeuw, R Costanza et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2011•Cited by: 9

  • The next generation of scenarios for climate change research and assessment

Open Access•Richard H Moss, Jae Edmonds et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2010

  • Sustainability or Collapse

    R Costanza, Lisa J Graumlich et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2007•Cited by: 33•References: 2

Understanding the history of how humans have interacted with the rest of nature can help clarify the options for managing our increasingly interconnected global system. Simple, deterministic relationships between environmental stress and social change are inadequate. Extreme drought, for instance, triggered both social collapse and ingenious management of water through irrigation. Human responses to change, in turn, feed into climate and ecologic…
