  • Do beaver ponds increase methane emissions along Arctic tundra streams

    Open Access•Jason A Clark, Ken D Tape et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Beaver engineering in the Arctic tundra induces hydrologic and geomorphic changes that are favorable to methane (CH 4 ) production. Beaver-mediated methane emissions are driven by inundation of existing vegetation, conversion from lotic to lentic systems, accumulation of organic rich sediments, elevated water tables, anaerobic conditions, and thawing permafrost. Ground-based measurements of CH 4 emissions from beaver ponds in permafrost landscape…

  • Geomorphological patterns of remotely sensed methane hot spots in the Mackenzie Delta, Canada

Open Access•Latha Baskaran, Clayton D Elder et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

We studied geomorphological controls on methane (CH 4 ) hotspots in the Mackenzie Delta region in northern Canada using airborne imaging spectroscopy collected as part of the Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment. Methane emissions hotspots were retrieved at ∼25 m 2 spatial resolution from a ∼10 000 km 2 NASA’s Next Generation Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer survey of the Mackenzie Delta acquired 31 July–3 August 2017. Separating …
