“I just do not have more energy to deal with this!”: A chairperson's perspective on levels of stress among students and faculty engaged in coursework at a Midwestern University in the United States
Transitions for college age individuals can be very stressful and researchers have long called for more research. In this essay, we discuss findings from an introductory college classroom where we asked students to report on their mental health. Combined with information from the literature and personal experiences, we highlight greater concerns about student stress following the 2020 global pandemic. Here we combine our insight and professional …
Mental models of aquaculture governance in Indonesia
Aquaculture stakeholders have mental models, which are the internal cognitive representations of how they understand and prioritize the different features of their aquaculture systems. Individuals and stakeholder groups are likely to have different mental models, with implications for making cooperative governance work and guiding the rapidly emerging sector’s sustainable development. We apply a participatory approach called fuzzy cognitive mappi…
Mental models for assessing coastal social-ecological systems following disasters
Using mental models to quantify linear and non-linear relationships in complex fishery systems
Reducing uncertain outcomes of fishery management actions requires an understanding of how fishers will be affected by policy actions. This requires integrating the local expertise of commercial fishers and seafood processors into management planning to predict how regulatory changes could impact social-ecological systems. Participatory modeling between managers, scientists, and industry can be useful in integrating different perspectives and gai…

Implications of Conservation Agriculture for Men's and Women's Workloads Among Marginalized Farmers in the Central Middle Hills of Nepal
Measures of gender-based labor distribution can contribute to understanding the feasibility of agricultural development in mountainous subsistence farming communities. Conservation agriculture (CA) can provide sustained crop yield and improved soil and water conservation in mountain areas prone to degradation and where few inputs are available. This study sought to measure the gendered labor impacts of CA practices and to assess their feasibility…

Knowledge Gain and Behavioral Change in Citizen-Science Programs: Citizen-Scientist Knowledge Gain
Citizen-science programs are often touted as useful for advancing conservation literacy, scientific knowledge, and increasing scientific-reasoning skills among the public. Guidelines for collaboration among scientists and the public are lacking and the extent to which these citizen-science initiatives change behavior is relatively unstudied. Over two years, we studied 82 participants in a three-day program that included education about non-native…
Ecosystem-Based Angling: Incorporating Recreational Anglers Into Ecosystem-Based Management
Coastal management institutions and recreational fishermen share concerns about the current state of marine fisheries. This article provides coastal managers with an outreach framework for recreational fishers that contextualizes social and ecosystem information toward the goals of ecosystem-based management. Based on a survey of anglers conducted at saltwater fishing expositions in the Northeast United States and on the literature, we report dat…
