Role of science and scientists in public environmental policy debates: The case of EU agrochemical and Nature Restoration Regulations
Halting biodiversity loss, mitigating global warming and maintaining the long‐term viability of rural and urban areas requires urgent policy action. However, environmental policies often trigger resistance and highly polarised public debates, with some actors employing pseudo‐scientific claims. This raises concern about the increasing impact of misinformation on policymaking. Here, we analyse the role of science and scientists in the public debat…
How the Green Architecture of the 2023-2027 Common Agricultural Policy could have been greener
A new 5-year Common Agricultural Policy has been in place since January 2023. Like its predecessors, this new policy will fail to deliver significant climatic and environmental benefits. We show how the Green Architecture of the policy relying on the three instruments of conditionality, eco-schemes, and agri-environment and climate measures could have been used more consistently and effectively. Our proposals are based on core principles of publi…

Grasping darkness: The Dark Ecological Network as a Social-Ecological Framework to Limit the Impacts of Light Pollution on Biodiversity

Comparing social representations of the landscape: A Methodology
Social representations (SRs) are systems of values, ideas, and practices that characterize individuals' and social groups' relationships to both their social and natural environment.Comparing SRs between places, social groups, and through time is critical to understanding how social-ecological systems (SESs) and their diverse uses are perceived, interpreted, and understood. This knowledge needs to be taken into account to achieve efficient land us…

Ways of farming and ways of thinking: Do Farmers' Mental Models of the Landscape Relate to Their Land Management Practices
Vuillot, C., N. Coron, F. Calatayud, C. Sirami, R. Mathevet, and A. Gibon. 2016. Ways of farming and ways of thinking: do farmers’ mental models of the landscape relate to their land management practices?. Ecology and Society 21(1):35.http://dx.doi.org/10.5751/ES-08281-210135
Functional landscape heterogeneity and animal biodiversity in agricultural landscapes
Biodiversity in agricultural landscapes can be increased with conversion of some production lands into 'more-natural'- unmanaged or extensively managed - lands. However, it remains unknown to what extent biodiversity can be enhanced by altering landscape pattern without reducing agricultural production. We propose a framework for this problem, considering separately compositional heterogeneity (the number and proportions of different cover types)…
