  • Transferring and scaling innovation in urban green-blue Infrastructure

    Open Access•Anton Shkaruba, Hanna Skryhan et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Futures•2026•References: 10

Green and Blue Infrastructure (GBI) innovations are increasingly promoted in Europe, yet their transfer to new socio-political contexts remains poorly understood. This study applies the Strategic Niche Management (SNM) framework to analyse the conditions under which GBI innovations can be replicated and scaled beyond their original settings. We examine six GBI projects from five EU Member States and assess their perceived transferability through …

  • Citizen science contributions to environmental risks assessment and management

Open Access•Monika Suškevičs, Chidiebere Christy Obi et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2025•References: 90

In an era of systemic risks from natural and human-induced hazards, we need approaches that address such risks at different governance levels, including those at the community level. Citizen science (CS)-public participation in research-is one such approach that has the potential to benefit risk assessment and management. Building on systematic evidence synthesis methodologies, we examine the individual and collective benefits from CS to environm…

  • Why is the eutrophication governance over the Lake of Baikal failing? Land use governance solutions need to account for barriers across sectors, scales, and actor groups

Open Access•Anton Shkaruba, Ruben Mnatsakanian et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2024•References: 33

In this study, we examined the failure of Russia’s environmental governance to prevent the nutrient load generated by littoral households and tourism businesses from reaching Lake Baikal. It is important to note that this failure has occurred even with sufficient implementation capacity and demonstrable political will to protect this body of water. This research inquiry into the ‘eutrophication governance’ of Baikal was based on field analysis of…

  • Conflicting perspectives on urban landscape quality in six urban regions in Europe and their implications for urban transitions

Open Access•Matthijs Hisschemöller, Viktar Kireyeu et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2022•References: 25

The European Landscape Convention urges countries to involve stakeholders including citizens in the governance of ordinary (urban) landscapes. This paper studies conflicting stakeholder perspectives on urban landscape quality in the context of urban sustainability transitions in six European urban regions in the Netherlands, Italy, France, Croatia, Belarus and the Russian Federation. Repertory grid technique helped to identify the dimensions thro…

  • Development of sustainable urban drainage systems in Eastern Europe

Open Access•Anton Shkaruba, Hanna Skryhan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Planning…•2021

We focused on the barriers to the implementation of enabling environments for sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. Based on interviews and desktop research, we analyzed overall framework conditions in these countries as well as implementation practices in three cities. Our findings demonstrate that the main problem was the deficit of strategic foresight for urban development. SUDS are mostly promoted by NGOs …

  • Stimuli and barriers to innovation in wildlife policy – long-term institutional analysis of wolf management in Belarus

Krzysztof Niedziałkowski, Anna Sidorovich et al.•ARTICLE•Innovation The European Journal…•2021•References: 8

Following democratisation, many post-socialist countries in Central and Eastern Europe adjusted their wolf policies to accommodate a more positive discourse on the species and the need to sustain and expand its populations. However, Belarus continues an approach informed by a discourse on wolf as a dangerous pest that should be reduced to the most possible extent through unrestricted hunting. Based on data from desk research covering the last 150…

  • Environmental drivers and sustainable transition of dachas in Eastern Europe

    Open Access•Anton Shkaruba, Hanna Skryhan et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 21

Dachas (collective gardens with summer houses in post-Soviet countries) is one of the most common features of peri-urban landscapes within the region that is the erstwhile USSR, with dacha conglomerates constituting half of the areas in the exurbs of major cities. In Belarus, Russia and Ukraine dachas largely preserved their original form and function. Arguably, they are at the turning point now, and can be further transformed sustainably if appr…
