The politics and co-production of knowledge in Indigenous wildfire management
In settler colonial countries such as Canada, increasing recognition of Indigenous rights and attention to Indigenous fire stewardship systems are resulting in calls for more collaborative decision making and practice. However, many collaborative processes fail to address knowledge inequities or give sufficient attention to the role of power and politics in shaping knowledge outcomes and processes. In this study we use the theoretical lens of co-…
Cooperative community wildfire response
With the growing scale of wildfires, many First Nations are demanding a stronger role in wildfire response. Disproportionate impacts on Indigenous communities (including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) in Canada are motivating these demands: although approximately 5 % of the population identifies as Indigenous, about 42 % of wildfire evacuation events occur communities that are more than half Indigenous. In what is now known as British Columbia,…
Western Canada’s new wildfire reality needs a new approach to fire management
Situating Indigenous knowledge for resilience in fire-dependent social-ecological systems

Using Complementary Drought Proxies Improves Interpretations of Fire Histories in Montane Forests
To investigate drought influences on mixed-severity fire regimes in montane forests of southeastern British Columbia, we developed a Douglas-fir latewood-width chronology and tested its associations with drought records across the fire season. Associations were strong between drought and latewood-widths particularly for June–August. Based on the chronology, we reconstructed the summer Drought Code, an index of moisture content in slow-drying deep…
South American Dendroecological Fieldweek 2016
The South American Dendroecological Fieldweek (SADEF) associated with the Third American Dendrochronology Conference was held in El Bolsón, Argentina, in March 2016. The main objective of the SADEF was to teach the basics of dendrochronology while applying specific knowledge to selected research questions. The course included participants and instructors from six different countries. This report describes activities of the course and briefly summ…
Paleoecological and Sedimentological Data from
This dataset contains sedimentological and paleoenvironmental measurements from a 351.5 cm sediment core that was collected from Pyatts Lake, south-east British Columbia, Canada. Sedimentological data include: radiocarbon dates and age-depth model, magnetic susceptibility, loss-on-ignition values, and particle size distributions. Palaeoecological data include: macroscopic charcoal (>150 μm), charcoal morphotypes; aquatic macroremains; pollen spec…
Assessment of Dendrochronological Year-of-Death Estimates Using Permanent Sample Plot Data
We combined crossdating with permanent sample plot (PSP) data to assess the precision and accuracy of year-of-death (YOD) estimates obtained by crossdating white spruce and lodgepole pine snags and logs. Crossdating indicated trees died between 1833 and 2006. Comparison of crossdated YOD dates for pairs of samples (n = 121) showed that 90% of YOD estimates were within 10 years of each other. Of 100 trees that died after PSP establishment, 59 YOD …
Reconstructing Population Dynamics of Yellow-Cedar in Declining Stands
Yellow-cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (D. Don) Spach) forests of coastal British Columbia are apparently experiencing decline in a manner similar to that observed in southeastern Alaska. In this pilot study, we collect tree-ring data from live and standing dead yellow-cedar trees from four declining sites on the North Coast of British Columbia. We use this data to compare growth patterns at our sites to those of yellow-cedar trees at non-decli…
Preservation of old‐growth forests
This paper explores the concepts of old‐growth forests, preservation and natural disturbance and demonstrates how contemporary biogeographic theory contributes to successful preservation of old‐growth forests. The case study analyzes the composition, structure, age and growth histories of trees in Big Timber Park, Whistler, British Columbia. Composition. The structure of the forest was diverse and tree ages ranged from 122 to 305 years. The densi…
