Assessing the influence of variation in forage availability on spatial patterns of beehive migration using a hybrid modelling approach – B-Agent
Why bees are critical for achieving sustainable development
Reductions in global bee populations are threatening the pollination benefits to both the planet and people. Whilst the contribution of bee pollination in promoting sustainable development goals through food security and biodiversity is widely acknowledged, a range of other benefits provided by bees has yet to be fully recognised. We explore the contributions of bees towards achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our …
Using a social-ecological system approach to enhance understanding of structural interconnectivities within the beekeeping industry for sustainable decision making
Patel, V., E. M. Biggs, N. Pauli, and B. Boruff. 2020. Using a social-ecological system approach to enhance understanding of structural interconnectivities within the beekeeping industry for sustainable decision making. Ecology and Society 25(2):24. https://doi.org/10.5751/ES-11639-250224
The tea landscape of Assam
Tea plays a pivotal role in India’s national economy, with the state of Assam the world’s largest regional producer of black tea. However, various socio-environmental factors are threatening tea production and the livelihoods of millions of people reliant upon the industry. Little documentation exists which provides comprehensive spatial insights into tea production practices and associated livelihoods. Additionally, vulnerability from climate ch…
Urbanisation-Induced Land Cover Temperature Dynamics for Sustainable Future Urban Heat Island Mitigation
Urban land cover is one of the fastest global growing land cover types which permanently alters land surface properties and atmospheric interactions, often initiating an urban heat island effect. Urbanisation comprises a number of land cover changes within metropolitan regions. However, these complexities have been somewhat neglected in temperature analysis studies of the urban heat island effect, whereby over-simplification ignores the heterogen…
Sustainable development and the water–energy–food nexus
The water–energy–food nexus is being promoted as a conceptual tool for achieving sustainable development. Frameworks for implementing nexus thinking, however, have failed to explicitly or adequately incorporate sustainable livelihoods perspectives. This is counterintuitive given that livelihoods are key to achieving sustainable development. In this paper we present a critical review of nexus approaches and identify potential linkages with sustain…
Observed run-off and suspended sediment dynamics from a minor glacierized basin in south-west Greenland
This study examined run-off and suspended sediment dynamics in a minor glacierized basin in south-west Greenland. A discharge (Q), turbidity (Tu) and air temperature (Tair) record was maintained for 26 days from 25 July 2009 to 19 August 2009 which was supplemented by 335 water samples analysed for suspended sediment concentration (SSC). Clear diurnal fluctuations in Tair, Q and SSC were observed. Mean Tair rose from 10.2 °C in a sunny clear Phas…
