  • Perceptual bias in Gestalt grouping by proximity affected by visual working memory load

Open Access•Aybora Koc, Aleksandar Bulajić et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2025

  • Perceptual bias contextualized in visually ambiguous stimuli

Open Access•Antonino Esposito, Salvatore G Chiarella et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2023

  • A Framework for Governance Capacity: A Broad Perspective on Steering Efforts in Society

    Open Access•Jitske Van Popering‐verkerk, Astrid Molenveld et al.•ARTICLE•Administration & Society•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 115

In the network society, the capacity to deal with societal issues is spread among interacting actors in governance networks. Knowledge about this capacity, often called “governance capacity,” is still fragmented and quite incoherent. The aim of this study is therefore to gain an integrated understanding of governance capacity. To do this, we conducted a literature review and organized focus groups. This resulted in the selection of five elements …

  • A century of Gestalt psychology in visual perception: II. Conceptual and theoretical foundations

    J Wagemans, Jacob Feldman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2012•Cited by: 24•References: 1

Our first review article (Wagemans et al., 2012) on the occasion of the centennial anniversary of Gestalt psychology focused on perceptual grouping and figure-ground organization. It concluded that further progress requires a reconsideration of the conceptual and theoretical foundations of the Gestalt approach, which is provided here. In particular, we review contemporary formulations of holism within an information-processing framework, allowing…

  • Goodness is central: Task invariance of perceptual organization in a dual‐task setting 1

Open Access•Thomas Lachmann, Corniel Van Leeuwen et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2008

We adopted the psychological refractoriness paradigm to study whether visual pattern goodness affects central processing load in a same‐different task. In a dual‐task experiment, a two‐alternative forced choice auditory classification was followed by a same‐different task in which Garner's classical five‐dot patterns were presented. Goodness of these patterns and stimulus‐onset asynchrony (SOA) between the first and second task were varied betwee…

  • Synchrony, Binding, and Consciousness: How Are They Related

    Open Access•Corniel Van Leeuwen, CEES VAN LEEUWEN•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2007

LaRock provides a rather perplexing critique of the binding problem. He argues that neural synchrony, the proposed solution to the binding problem, is not sufficient to explain the unity of objects in visual consciousness. Did anyone claim it was? Neural synchrony can at best be necessary for consciousness, not sufficient. The binding problem originally has nothing to do with the conscious content of our perception. Misidentification of binding a…

  • Testing Organization Preferences in Serial Pattern Learning

Corniel Van Leeuwen, CEES VAN LEEUWEN•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1991

Subjects studied a series of colored dots for 6 s and then performed a memory reproduction task for which they chose alternative puzzle pieces from a set. Series were presented repeatedly until subjects made a completely correct reproduction. The puzzle pieces contained parts of the series that were expected to interact with the groups identified by spontaneous perceptual organization. By assuming that same grouping in series and puzzle pieces wo…
