  • Shifting temporal dynamics of human mobility in the United States

Open Access•K Sparks, Jessica Moehl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Transport Geography•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 3

In this paper we analyze the average hourly temporal dynamics of human mobility in the United States from 2019 to 2020. We discuss how large decreases in human mobility nonuniformly effect the daily temporal dynamics of aggregate human behavior. The data used are weekly activity patterns for POIs from 2019 to 2020 in the United States, provided by SafeGraph and made openly available to academic and research institutions. We use clustering methods…

  • Optimal reblocking as a practical tool for neighborhood development

Open Access•Christa Brelsford, Taylor Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2019

Fast urbanization is a common feature of many developing human societies. In many cases, past and present, explosive population growth in cities outstrips the rate of provision of housing and urban services and leads to the formation of informal settlements or slums. Slums are extremely varied in terms of their histories, infrastructure, and rates of change, but they share certain common features: informal land use, lack of physical accesses, and…

  • Heterogeneity and scale of sustainable development in cities

Open Access•Christa Brelsford, J Lobo et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2017

Significance Most nations worldwide have recently committed to solving their most severe challenges of sustainability by 2030, including eradicating extreme poverty and providing universal access to basic services. But how? Rapid urbanization is creating the conditions for widespread economic growth and human development, but its consequences are very uneven. We show how measures of sustainable development—identified by residents of poor neighbor…

  • Growing into Water Conservation? Decomposing the Drivers of Reduced Water Consumption in Las Vegas, NV

    Open Access•Christa Brelsford, Joshua K Abbott•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Increasing population and drought have lead to growing concerns about water scarcity across the US despite a long decline in per-capita consumption. To what extent is this decline the result of water policy vs. other exogenous changes? Many municipalities implement multiple water-focused policies simultaneously – while still subject to other exogenous drivers – so it is important to pair policy evaluations with approaches that examine multiple dr…
