Cumulative Exposure to Unconventional Natural Gas Development and the Risk of Childhood Cancer: A Registry-Based Case–Control Study
The rapid growth of unconventional natural gas development (UNGD), also known as hydraulic fracturing, has raised concerns of potential exposures to hazardous chemicals. Few studies have examined the risk of childhood cancer from exposure to UNGD. A case-control study included 498 children diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, central nervous system neoplasms, and malignant bone tumors during the period 2010-2019 identified through the Pennsylvania …
Neuropsychological Assessment of Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Almaty, Kazakhstan
Cognitive impairment in older adults is a major public concern for Kazakhstan's aging population. We aimed to (1) administer a neuropsychological test battery (NTB) in domains relevant to aging-associated cognitive impairment in a sample of adults aged 60+ without dementia in Almaty, Kazakhstan; (2) investigate the associations between demographic factors and test performance; and (3) provide information on the distribution of NTB scores as preli…
Lagged Association of Ambient Outdoor Air Pollutants with Asthma-Related Emergency Department Visits within the Pittsburgh Region
Asthma affects millions of people globally and is especially concerning in populations living with poor air quality. This study examines the association of ambient outdoor air pollutants on asthma-related emergency department (ED) visits in children and adults throughout the Pittsburgh region. A time-stratified case-crossover design is used to analyze the lagged effects of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and gaseous pollutants, e.g., ozone (O 3…
Healthy Air, Healthy Brains: Advancing Air Pollution Policy to Protect Children’s Health
Evidence is growing on the adverse neurodevelopmental effects of exposure to combustion-related air pollution. Project TENDR (Targeting Environmental Neurodevelopmental Risks), a unique collaboration of leading scientists, health professionals, and children’s and environmental health advocates, has identified combustion-related air pollutants as critical targets for action to protect healthy brain development. We present policy recommendations fo…

Drake Chemical Workers' Health Registry: Coping with community tension over toxic exposures
BACKGROUND: Programs to communicate health risk information and to protect the health of groups exposed to toxic substances need to tailor interventions to the political, economic, and cultural situation of the at-risk group. In particular, such programs must often cope with exceptional community tension and conflict over these exposures. METHODS: This article uses interviews and written materials to document and describe the state of affairs tha…
Occupational stress, suppressed anger, and hypertension
The present study examined the modifying effect of suppressed anger on the relationship between job stress and hypertension. The study population consisted of a random sample of male hourly workers, aged 40-63 years, employed at one of two plants in the metropolitan Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. Those men currently taking antihypertensive medication were excluded from the analyses. With both plants combined, stratified analyses indicated that, c…
Blood lead levels among high-risk children, Detroit, Michigan
Since 1972, a federally funded lead screening program has been operational in Detroit, Michigan. Blood lead screening data (27,430 initial tests on Black children less than or equal to 6 years) were assigned by census tract of child's residence to one of the 15 socioeconomically similar areas in geographic proximity to one another. Higher blood lead levels were associated with lower education, lower income, and increased proportion of single pare…
Environmental Events Preceding Sudden Death in Women
The present case-control study examined if sudden cardiac death in women is preceded by death of a significant other, change in residence, or change in work. The sample included 81 Caucasian women ages 25-64 years in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, who died suddenly from arteriosclerotic heart disease (ASHD) within a 11/2 year interval. Each case was matched to a neighborhood control on the basis of race, age, and sex. Results revealed that relat…
