Integrating linguistic and geographic methods in toponymic analysis
Toponyms offer valuable clues regarding historical language geographies, but toponymic analysis has often suffered from methodological shortcomings. In particular, post-hoc semantic claims, unmotivated formal correspondences, and lack of systematic corroboration undermine the reliability of many proposals. This paper outlines two modes of toponymic research — form-to-geography and geography-to-form — and introduces four simple, replicable methods…
Legacy effects of European colonialism on hotspots of biocultural diversity threat
Patterns of biological diversity have been shaped by cultural practices in the past, while in turn, cultures and languages have evolved in close interaction with local species and ecosystems. However, in the Anthropocene, human activities are putting increasingly diverse pressures on ecosystems and cultures, resulting in accelerating threat levels on both. Understanding where biological and cultural diversity is threatened globally, and how far c…
Standard negation
This study compares standard negation in the indigenous languages of South America to the rest of the world. We show that South American languages not only prefer postverbal negation to preverbal negation and negative morphology to syntax, but postverbal morphological negation to any other negation strategy. The predominance of this strategy makes South America distinct from other macro-areas. The study also considers the areal distribution of ne…

Assessing temporal couplings in social-ecological island systems

Assessing temporal couplings in social–ecological island systems: historical deforestation and soil loss on Mauritius (Indian Ocean). Interdisciplinary island studies
In this paper, we present the outline of an interdisciplinary undergraduate course entitled: “Islands: Models for our Planet – Metaphors for our World”, and will reflect on insights gained during its development and teaching in two consecutive academic years (2014-2015; 2015-2016). The main challenge faced during the development and teaching of this interdisciplinary course was to introduce a wide range of topics in a coherent way. For this reaso…
