  • The role of community‐level institutions in smallholder land restoration

    Open Access•Daniel Wiegant, Soumya Balasubramanya•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2026

This review focuses on the role of community‐level institutions in the adoption of land restoration practices by smallholder farmers. Based on a systematic review of 72 peer‐reviewed articles from 33 low‐ and middle‐income countries, the review synthesizes recent empirical evidence on the various roles these institutions play in supporting smallholders. Four roles are highlighted: (1) collective action, (2) representation, (3) market services and…

  • Alignment mechanisms to effectively govern the sustainable development goals

    Open Access•Daniel Wiegant, Art Dewulf et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 10

The Sustainable Development Goals are intended to be implemented in an indivisible manner, underlining the importance of interlinkages and interdependencies between different SDG-relevant policy areas. The complexity of synergies and trade-offs that are inherent to SDG interactions increases the risk that governments cherry-pick the SDGs that align with current policy interests and priorities, while neglecting others. No development actor can sin…

  • Cross-sector challenges in Ethiopian forest and landscape restoration governance

    Open Access•Daniel Wiegant, Stephanie Mansourian et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 9

The federal government of Ethiopia set a national target to restore 15 million hectares of degraded and deforested lands by 2030. While forest and landscape restoration governance is intended to be a multi-actor process through which various land uses are coordinated, in practice it turns out to be difficult to bring specialised government agencies together to achieve restoration targets. We conducted a policy document review, 56 semi-structured …

  • Unravelling cross-scale and cross-level challenges in Ethiopian forest and landscape restoration governance

Open Access•Daniel Wiegant, Gete Zeleke Eshetu et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2022•Cited by: 1

Ethiopia’s federal government has committed to one of the most ambitious forest and landscape restoration targets as part of the Bonn Challenge. To achieve the targets, actors at multiple governance levels aim to influence relevant ecological processes, drawing particular attention to the governance processes that are used to translate national restoration targets into local action. We take a multilevel governance approach and focus on the cross-…

  • Five scale challenges in Ecuadorian forest and landscape restoration governance

    Open Access•Daniel Wiegant, Manuel Peralvo et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 18

The forest and landscape restoration (FLR) targets set as part of the Bonn Challenge draw attention to the governance arrangements required to translate national FLR targets into local action. To achieve the targets, actors at multiple levels of the governance scale aim to influence relevant processes on the ecological scale. In this article, we focus on the scale challenges relating to the implementation of Ecuador’s restoration targets, by anal…
