Ecologizing earth observation
This article traces an alternative history of Earth observation emerging from Ecuador's recognition of the rights of nature and grassroots struggles against extractivism. Situated in a collaboration between remote sensing experts, environmental lawyers, multimodal artists, and communities affected by oil contamination, this ethnography examines how satellite imagery becomes a tool of ecologization. Bringing together the economization research pro…
Detection of Antibiotic-Resistance Genes in Drinking Water
This study investigated the presence of antibiotic-resistance genes in drinking water consumed by the university community in the Peruvian Amazon. Water samples were collected from three primary sources: inflow from the distribution network, a storage cistern, and an underground intake. Conventional PCR was employed to detect genes associated with resistance to erythromycin ( ermC ), ampicillin ( amp ), ciprofloxacin ( QEP ), multidrug resistance…

Teaching the Politics of Numbers with EthnoData
This essay discusses the development and use of EthnoData, a multimodal and multimedia digital platform designed to critically engage different publics with data production and circulation in Ecuador. Created by Kaleidos, a research center at the University of Cuenca, EthnoData combines ethnography and large datasets on violent deaths, femicides, hate crimes, and missing people to analyze and challenge the conventional authority of official stati…

A financial frontier for Catalonia
During a period of pro-independence mass mobilizations and diminishing financial confidence, the government of Catalonia attached a traditional idea of the rural household to its market in public debt. This article analyzes how nationalistic understandings of household are mobilized to support the struggle for independence and promote austerity policies. It also examines how an ethos of Catalan kinship drives the expansion of the household fronti…

The Bernal Prize is awarded annually to individuals who have made distinguished contributions to the field of STS. Gaming the crisis
This article analyzes nonprofessional trading in derivatives during the Great Spanish Recession. It depicts playful engagements with speculative forms of credit and debt on the part of everyday people facing mass unemployment. The article calls into question contemporary theories of debt that characterize it as inherently destructive or inherently productive. My main argument suggests that credit-debt dyads are constant sites of manipulation, neg…

A Clinical Economy of Speculation
This article concerns itself with financial traders in Spain who have been diagnosed with gambling disorder. It analyzes what I call the clinical economy of speculation, in which the category of problem gambler is repurposed to draw new lines around proper financial trading. In exploring the expansion of post-financial crisis regulatory mechanisms for credit and debt, as well as widening inequalities across the field of investment, I depict how b…

Multilevel Agrobiodiversity and Conservation of Andean Potatoes in Central Peru
Botanical species and morphological and genetic diversity represent different yet linked units of conservation. These features, and their spatial distribution in the central Peruvian Andean highlands of Huancavelica, were used as a basis for characterizing and quantifying potato agrobiodiversity at different scales. Results show that individual farm households maintain high levels of cultivar, morphological, and genetic diversity. At the regional…
