  • Use of limestone karst forests by Bornean orangutans ( Pongo pygmaeus morio ) in the Sangkulirang peninsula, east Kalimantan, Indonesia

Open Access•Andrew J Marshall, Leonardo Salas et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2007

The Indonesian province of East Kalimantan is home to some of the largest remaining contiguous tracts of lowland Dipterocarp forest on the island of Borneo. Nest surveys recently conducted in these forests indicated the presence of a substantial population of Eastern Bornean orangutans ( Pongo pygmaeus morio ) in the Berau and East Kutai regencies in the northern half of the province. The Sangkulirang Peninsula contains extensive limestone karst …

  • Wildlife Conservation in Bornean Timber Concessions

Open Access•Erik Meijaard, Douglas Sheil et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2006•Cited by: 1

Based on an extensive review of the literature, and broad consultation with experts, we have assessed the sensitivity of Bornean vertebrates to the direct and indirect effects of timber harvest. Wellimplemented selective logging has a relatively limited direct impact on wildlife populations: few species appear quite sensitive, some benefit, some decline. However, current management practices in Indonesian Borneo generally cause a decline in wildl…
