Historical framework to explain long-term coupled human and natural system feedbacks
Steen-Adams, M. M., N. Langston, M. D. O. Adams, and D. J. Mladenoff. 2015. Historical framework to explain long-term coupled human and natural system feedbacks: application to a multiple-ownership forest landscape in the northern Great Lakes region, USA. Ecology and Society 20(1): 28. https://doi.org/10.5751/ES-06930-200128
Logging the Great Lakes Indian Reservations
We investigate the Ojibwe experience of the logging era in the Great Lakes region (ca. 1860-1925) through a historical case study of forest management on the Bad River reservation, located in northern Wisconsin. Although primary forest clearance reshaped ecological, cultural, and political landscapes throughout the region, the Ojibwe experienced the logging era in ways that differed from their white neighbors. As treaty-defined land cessions cata…
White Pine in the Northern Forests
This essay examines eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) removal and recovery on the Bad River Reservation of northern Wisconsin. A key species in the environmental history of the Great Lakes region, white pine has greatly declined as a forest component since Euro-American settlement. Forests eventually did regenerate on much of the cut-over area, but their composition is quite different than the earlier forests, with aspen and other hardwoods d…
Tallgrass prairie a vanishing American landscape
