Air pollution success stories in the United States: The value of long-term observations
We summarize past examples of the use of science to document the effectiveness of policy in air quality management. Our goal is to inform public discourse amidst attempts to negate the relevance and value of scientific data and fact-based analysis in favor of partisan opinion and ideology. Although air quality is fundamental to environmental and human health, air pollution has degraded natural systems and reduced economic and cultural benefits an…
Simulating land use changes under alternative policy scenarios for conservation of native forests in south-central Chile
Factors Influencing Adaptive Capacity in the Reorganization of Forest Management in Alaska
Several studies of U.S. National Forests suggest that declines of their associated forest products industries were driven by synergistic changes in federal governance and market conditions during the late 20th century. In Alaska, dramatic shifts in the economic and political settings of the Tongass National Forest (Tongass) drove changes in governance leading to collapse of an industrial forest management system in the early 1990s. However, 15 ye…
Growth and Collapse of a Resource System: An Adaptive Cycle of Change in Public Lands Governance and Forest Management in Alaska

Resilience and Vulnerability of Northern Regions to Social and Environmental Change
The arctic tundra and boreal forest were once considered the last frontiers on earth because of their vast expanses remote from agricultural land-use change and industrial development. These regions are now, however, experiencing environmental and social changes that are as rapid as those occurring anywhere on earth. This paper summarizes the role of northern regions in the global system and provides a blueprint for assessing the factors that gov…
