How to operationalise organisational resilience? Wargaming looming Black Swans in complex systems
In an increasingly volatile world, organisations must be prepared to navigate high-impact crises such as pandemics, geopolitical tensions, and disasters. As a result, resilience has become a strategic priority. Operationalising resilience, however, remains challenging due to three key barriers. First, the complex, interconnected nature of organisations makes it difficult to understand interdependencies and implement effective resilience intervent…
Soil extraction facilitates climate change adaptation and alters urban ecosystem services
Peri-urban areas are witnessing some of the most rapid transformations worldwide, marked by the conversion of agricultural land into urbanised zones. While prior research has investigated soil sealing and its impacts on Ecosystem Services (ES), the influence of soil extraction for building materials on other ES remains understudied. In Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar, soil extraction for brick-making plays an integral role in the lan…
Can a Science Week empower scientists for conservation advocacy
Scientists feel a growing need to advocate for knowledge-driven policies to address climate change and biodiversity loss, yet few feel empowered to do so. During the Neretva Science Week (NSW) 2023, an international group of scientists conducted research on the threatened Neretva River in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and had the opportunity to engage with activists and journalists. We used a questionnaire to investigate the perspectives of these scien…

From board games to immersive urban imaginaries
Given the increasing importance of public participation in urban transformation processes, serious games have emerged as a promising tool for fostering active engagement and constructive dialogue. By providing insights into opposing arguments and helping navigate complex trade-offs, serious games can support informed decision-making and promote collaborative solutions. Although digital media are increasingly used in games, applications in serious…

Implementing the European Green Deal requires a consistent food systems’ policy that involves not only targeting the supply side but also conducting extensive changes in diets at the consumer level. Reducing meat consumption is an obvious strategy to put the European food system on track to meet the Green Deal’s goals. This cannot be achieved by focusing solely on consumer choice and individual responsibility. Stronger governance is required to r…

Introducing the Argumentation Framework Within Agent-Based Models to Better Simulate Agents' Cognition in Opinion Dynamics
This paper introduces a generic agent-based model simulating the exchange and the di usion of pro and con arguments. It is applied to the case of the di usion of vegetarian diets in the context of a potential emergence of a second nutrition transition. To this day, agent-based simulation has been extensively used to study opinion dynamics. However, the vast majority of existing models have been limited to extremely abstract and simplified represe…
