  • African Decolonial Theory

    Open Access•Patricia Daley, Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni et al.•ARTICLE•Antipode•2026•References: 61

Antipode has become a key platform for engaging with decolonial and anticolonial scholarship, as well as adjacent fields such as Black geographies, Indigenous studies, Latin American feminism, and work on settler‐colonialism. African reference points in this literature, however, have been far less common, both in the journal and more broadly in radical geography. Recognizing that there are several loci of enunciation for decolonial and anticoloni…

  • Decolonization and Afro-Feminism

    Sylvia Tamale•BOOK•Decolonization and Afro-Feminism•2020•Cited by: 90

"The main aim of the book project is to develop a resource that moves legal education away from conventional teaching and research methods which employ a near-exclusive focus on the black letter of the law, perpetuating a colonial, hierarchical, and decontextualized understanding of contemporary struggles on the continent. The book analyzes a number of key legal concepts through the twin lenses of Decolonization and Afro-Feminism. It tackles issu…

Jane Bennett, Sylvia Tamale•BOOK•Research on Gender and…•2017

This collection comprises a diverse and stimulating collection of essays on questions of gender and sexualities, crafted by both established and younger researchers. The collection includes fascinating insights into topics as varied as the popularity of thong underwear in urban Kenya, the complexity of Tanzanian youth's negotiation of HIV-cultures, the dialogues between religion and controversial questions in sexualities activism, and the meaning…

  • Confronting the Politics of Nonconforming Sexualities in Africa

    Open Access•Sylvia Tamale•ARTICLE•African Studies Review•2013•Cited by: 71•References: 15

The connections between democracy and sexuality-that is, between civil liberties and the protection of nonconforming sexualities-are rarely discussed in Africa. On the contrary, nonconforming sexualities have been instrumentalized to entrench dictatorships and to weaken democracy. As was the case in early twentieth-century Europe and North America, homophobia has become a political tool used by conservative politicians to promote self-serving age…

    Open Access•Sylvia Tamale•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•2006•Cited by: 25•References: 1

Talk of ‘ensonga za Ssenga’ (Ssenga matters) among the Baganda people of Uganda signifies an institution that has endured through centuries as a tradition of sexual initiation. At the helm is the paternal (or surrogate) aunt whose role is to tutor young women in a range of sexual matters, including pre-menarche practices, pre-marriage preparation, erotics and reproduction. In contemporary Uganda, commercial Ssenga services abound, with Ssenga col…

  • Gender trauma in Africa

    Open Access•Sylvia Tamale•ARTICLE•Journal of African Law•2004

The article considers the impact of the public/private divide on the lives of African women. It discusses how the “protection” of the private from legal and other scrutiny helps to conceal the burden of caring for family which is borne almost exclusively by women. Moreover, the devaluation and non-recognition of women's labour in “private” family enterprises is reinforced by the inequitable division and enjoyment of property, not least land. Inde…

  • Point of order, Mr Speaker

    Sylvia Tamale•ARTICLE•Gender & Development•2000•Cited by: 7•References: 6

At the close of the millennium, there is a wave of invigorating air sweeping across the African continent. The refreshing breeze can be felt in the form of women smashing the gendered 'glass ceiling' in a bid to overcome the cultural and structural barriers that impede their political careers. In this short article, I examine the relationship of African women to parliament. In the first section, I look at women's involvement in politics in pre-co…
