Matachées: Painted Hides, Indigenous Nations, and French Colonial Encounters along the Mississippi Valley
Drawing on art history, anthropology, and colonial history, this article explores the production and cultural significance of matachées (painted) hides in the Mississippi Valley during the 18th century, under French colonial rule. Rikawa: Tasmanian Aboriginal Kelp Water Containers
Water containers made of kelp from lutruwita (Tasmania) are one of the rarest object types found in ethnographic museum collections. Only two, well-documented, historic examples still exist. Jazz, the illustrated book by Henri Matisse, is a testament to the vitality of the artist in the last decade of his career. The book consists of twenty illustrations reproduced in 370 copies using a stencil-based printing technique and the same Linel gouaches the artist had used for the original maquettes.
