• Limits, excesses and pleasures: Practices and discourses of sex work in a Mexican rural community

Rodrigo Parrini, Rodrigo Parrini Roses et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2017

In Tomatlán, a small city on the Mexican Pacific Coast there is a tolerance zone in which a group of sex workers, separated from the rest of the city by a garbage dump, offer their services to local men. The women present themselves materially and symbolically as agents of regulation with respect to male sexuality, itself constructed as overwhelming and insatiable, which, were it not for services provided by the sex workers, would threaten the fa…

    Open Access•Ana Amuchástegui•ARTICLE•Estudios Sociológicos de El…•2017•Cited by: 2

  • Body and embodiment in the experience of abortion for Mexican women: The sexual body, the fertile body, and the body of abortion

    Open Access•Ana Amuchástegui•ARTICLE•Gender, Sexuality & Feminism•2013

In April 2007, Mexico City's Legislative Assembly passed a law that decriminalized abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, and established that the Ministry of Health was to provide the service. This has allowed Mexican women to seek a legal termination of pregnancy (LTP) without any legal procedure at all, therefore setting different coordinates for the experience. This article explores the above issues through the qualitative analysis of 24 inter…

    Ana Amuchástegui, Edith Flores•ARTICLE•Citizenship Studies•2013•Cited by: 8•References: 5

In April 2007, after a period of intense social debate, the Mexico City Legal Assembly legalized abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, which was an unprecedented development in women's rights in Mexico. Within the context of a proliferation of public discourses about women's citizenship rights changes in women's social status in Mexico, this article explores the extent to which the newly legalized character of abortion is interpreted b…

  • Subject, sexuality and biopower: Legal defence of soldiers living with HIV and sexual rights in Mexico

Open Access•Ana Amuchástegui, Rodrigo Parrini Roses•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2010

The appeals that 11 service men filed against the Mexican Army in 2007 for unfair dismissal, on the grounds that they were living with HIV, opened an unprecedented chapter in the relationship between sexuality and the judicial system in Mexico, and in the links between biopower and the processes of democratisation and citizenship in the country. In this article, we analyse this process by looking at claimants' discourses as well as those of the S…

    Open Access•Ana Amuchástegui, Peter Aggleton•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2007

In Mexico's predominantly Catholic culture, the enjoyment of sexual rights faces many challenges, both at the political and the personal level. Although often connected, the meanings of sexuality and reproduction are fundamentally different and so, correspondingly, are possibilities for the exercise of reproductive rights versus sexual rights. Such views are ‘gendered’ by the idea that women's desire and sexual activity should be controlled and m…
