The Social Construction of Strain and Ideological Models of Grievance in Contemporary Movements
Paul Lazarsfeld and the Study of Knowledge Applications
The death of Paul Lazarsfeld during the 1976 ASA convention saddened all sociologists. In this paper, three of Lazarsfeld's colleagues at The University of Pittsburgh attempt to put the entire corpus of his works on the sociology of knowledge and communication into perspective, with special reference to his recent work (with Jeffrey G. Reitz, in collaboration with Ann K. Pasanella), An Introduction to Applied Sociology (Elesvier, 1976). They argu…
Ideological Primary Groups in Contemporary Cultural Movements
This paper argues that “post-modern” societies generate movements for cultural change in models “of” and “for” identity and consciousness, rather than traditional kinds of social movements aiming at structural changes in institutional arrangements. The distinctive and crucial unit in comtemporary cultural movements is what we have termed the “ideological group.” These groups are similar to the “ideological informal groups” which recruited members…

Crossroads of Crisis
John H. Marx, Joseph E. Seldin, Crossroads of Crisis: II. Organizational and Ideological Models for Contemporary Quasi-Therapeutic Communes, Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Vol. 14, No. 2 (Jun., 1973), pp. 183-191
Crossroads of Crisis
The convergence of a number of distinct intellectual and traditions in the mental health field has produced a conception of non-professional, quasi-therapeutic communities that profoundly influences contemparary communes. One of these traditions started with Freudian psychoanalytic theory and the dynamic, individually-oriented psychotherapies built upon it. A second, initially-independent tradition that influences the contemporary situation is th…
Psychotherapeutic 'Birds of a Feather
This study examines the relative influence of social-class status and religio-cultural values on psychotherapeutic relationships between psychiatrists and clinical psychologists and their private patients. Questionnaire survey data on professional therapists in the Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago metropolitan communities are used to re-assess the underlying bases of the homophilic hypothesis that Kandel (1966) and recently Rowden et al. (1970)…
Martial Status and Occupational Success among Mental Health Professionals
Focusing on psychotherapists, this paper explores the way in which marital status and a strategic professional experience, receiving personal psychotherapy, interact to affect occupational success among psychiatrists and clinical psychologists in three metropolitan communities. Confining the analysis to male members of these two professions, data are presented to demonstrate that success is strongly related to marriage, but not marital stability.…
A Multidimensional Conception of Ideologies in Professional Arenas
The Origins and Correlates of Religious Adherence and Apostasy among Mental Health Professionals
This paper examines the socio-cultural sources and personal correlates of specific types of religious adherence and apostasy among mental health professionals in three metropolitan communities. Data are presented to demonstrate the following: three types of apostasy are prevalent and clearly differentiated; apostates are neither atypical nor “deviant” and apostasy is not simply the result of individual psychological dynamics but also the result o…
