Braidotti within Reason
Rosi Braidotti is a major philosopher and feminist thinker, who has authored numerous academic articles, monographs, anthologies, and reference manuals. She is a highly influential critical posthumanist. Her non-anthropocentric vision of posthuman ethical subjectivity and her drawing on science for its realization and vision of transdisciplinary posthumanities intersecting with the sciences, based on mutual respect, are both to be lauded. Though …
Posthumanist stylistics
I present a posthumanist approach to literary interpretation using stylistic analysis. It is posthumanist since i) digital cameras/audio-video resources and editing applications prompt multimodal readings of literary works unlikely from human intuition alone; ii) anthropocentrism in literary texts is defamiliarised. I highlight how stylistic analysis can be used productively for developing multimodal creativity in posthumanist reading by motivati…
Postdigital stylistics
Stylistics is a branch of linguistics concerned with the systematic analysis of style in language, particularly literary style. Poetry has been a staple of stylistics. Creative performance of poems and stylistic analysis, however, have rarely been bedfellows. I showcase a stylistics pedagogy for creatively interpreting poetry in higher education where students make digitally multimodal storied interpretations of poems. The pedagogy reflects conte…
Critical Discourse Analysis and Language Cognition
An interdisciplinary study of issues of language manipulation, this book explores the interpretation stage of critical discourse analysis (CDA) for students in areas such as English language, media studies and applied linguistics, as well as practitioners in the field. It also offers a new way forward for highlighting manipulative language, accomplishing this through the innovation of a model of reading for gist. The model is an original synthesi…

Counter-discourse corpora, ethical subjectivity and critique of argument
In the article, I model an alternative critical discourse analysis (CDA) pedagogy which is based on an ethical subjectivity instead of a political subjectivity. Aimed at undergraduates, it facilitates critical purchase on arguments which attack the standpoint of relatively powerless groups/organizations (who seek political change). Via corpus linguistic analysis of appropriate web-based data, I show how the analyst can rigorously find out at scal…
Deleuze, Guattari and the use of web-based corpora for facilitating critical analysis of public sphere arguments
Electronic deconstruction
This article introduces a corpus-based procedure for revealing tensions in a text which seeks to persuade an audience into a particular point of view on a particular topic, tensions which may otherwise be difficult to see; the text is thus deconstructed and loses credibility. I refer to this corpus-based, critical approach to revealing tensions in such texts as Electronic Deconstruction. In drawing on corpus linguistic method for this end, as wel…
Investigating Argumentation in Reading Groups
This article makes a contribution to understanding informal argumentation by focusing on the discourse of reading groups. Reading groups, an important cultural phenomenon in Britain and other countries, regularly meet in members’ houses, in pubs or restaurants, in bookshops, workplaces, schools or prisons to share their experiences of reading literature, usually fiction. Investigating argumentation in reading groups offers an opportunity for obta…
Limitations of the logico-rhetorical module
My focus is the ‘logico-rhetorical module’ (Sperber, 2000). This mental module, Sperber hypothesizes, is an evolved ability of human beings to examine critically what someone is saying, for example, to detect inconsistency or inadequate evidence in an argument. On the assumption that we have this natural ability, Chilton (2005) questions the need for Critical Discourse Analysis; in contrast, on his reading of Sperber’s work, Hart (this issue) arg…
Inferencing and cultural reproduction
On 1 May 2004, the European Union (EU) expanded to twenty-five countries, eight of the ten new countries being from Eastern Europe. Around six weeks prior to this date, the popular British tabloid, The Sun, began to conduct a quasi-campaign which highlighted the detrimental effects of probable immigration from Eastern European countries to the United Kingdom. This article investigates a 26,000-word corpus of quasi-campaign texts from The Sun. I e…

Critical Discourse Analysis and the Corpus-informed Interpretation of Metaphor at the Register Level
One aspect of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) involves examining how metaphors in texts, particularly hard news texts (reports of very recent conflicts, crimes etc), imply certain values. The usual theoretical basis for such analysis is Lakoff and Johnson (1980). My article shows problems with transplanting Lakoff and Johnson’s discourse-level approach to a CDA register-level one. I use Lee’s (1992) analysis and interpretation of what he identi…
The role of appraisal and corpora in detecting covert evaluation
‘Dog-whistle politics’ is a phrase that has recently been coined to capture a form of covert evaluation. This is where political communication seemingly uses neutral meanings but where in fact a negative message is likely to be ‘heard’ by the target community (Manning 2004). This article explores the use of dog-whistle journalism in the British popular tabloid The Sun by examining a news report published in it on May 1st 2004, the day that 10 new…
Finding the Global Groove
Within critical discourse analysis (CDA), there has been ongoing interest in how texts position readers to view social and political events in a particular way. Traditionally, analysts have not examined how positioning is built up dynamically as a reader progresses through a text by tracing how earlier parts of a text are likely to affect subsequent interpretation. This article shows how APPRAISAL tools (as developed within the systemic functiona…
