  • Polanyi’s non-ideological countermovement

    Open Access•Rowan Alcock•ARTICLE•Globalizations•2026

This article engages with Goodwin (2024. Radical (re) readings of Polanyi: Splitting hairs and building bridges. Globalizations) to clarify the non-ideological reading of Polanyi’s countermovement concept. Goodwin (2024) is the first paper to explicitly, and in detail, respond to the non-ideological reading and is thus important to discuss to help deepen understanding of Polanyi’s countermovement. This article will first outline eight arguments t…

  • The Double Movement in Action

    Open Access•Rowan Alcock•ARTICLE•Journal of Current Chinese Affairs•2026

This article deepens understanding of Polanyi's double movement and countermovement concepts. Through an exploratory case study of a Chinese wet-market, it interrogates a Chinese countermovement and develops an analysis on how it informs, and is informed by, a larger double movement. This article is differentiated from other attempts to deconstruct Polanyi's countermovement concept as it interrogates the unconscious countermovement. It expands Po…

  • Polanyi on crisis

    Open Access•Rowan Alcock•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Society•2026

This article uses Karl Polanyi's understanding of the crisis inherent in liberal economics to analyse a contemporary crisis—Trump's global tariff agenda. It argues that Trump's tariff agenda conforms to Polanyi's interpretation of how the crisis of liberal economics can disintegrate into more malignant forces. However, this article argues the Trump tariff agenda is a response to a larger crisis of contemporary liberal economics—climate breakdown.…

  • Polanyi in rural China

    Rowan Alcock•ARTICLE•New Political Economy•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This article clarifies the use of Polanyian theory to interrogate rural China’s historical trajectory. It critiques the use of Polanyi’s double movement concept to analyse state-socialist periods arguing that because the double movement concept was explicitly created to interrogate capitalist systems, in which land and labour were marketized, it cannot be transposed onto state-socialist periods. This article further argues that as the double move…

  • The Unconscious Countermovement and the Conscious Polanyian Movement

    Rowan Alcock•ARTICLE•New Political Economy•2020•Cited by: 8•References: 13

This article aims to overcome an impasse in current Polanyian scholarship by suggesting a new vocabulary to explain Polanyi’s ‘double movement’ and ‘countermovement’ concepts – the unconscious countermovement and the conscious Polanyian movement. It argues current literature often misinterprets these core concepts, which can lead to a misunderstanding of Polanyi’s general thesis. This paper uses the Carton (2018. On the Nature of the Countermovem…
