Social innovation for regional energy transition? An agency perspective on transformative change in non-core regions
Regional energy transitions are largely understood as technology-driven processes. We argue that social innovation (SI) is as important and that scrutinizing it calls for an agency perspective. Analysing two examples of SI in energy in Austrian non-core regions, we show how resources, relations and reflexivity enabled agency to promote SI and consequently sustain energy transition. We find that SI produces new regional resources and capacities, p…

Targeting climate change adaptation strategies to small-scale private forest owners
Introduction
The relationship between protected areas and forest management has been one that has often been fraught with conflict. New practices in the forest sector and new ecological insights have led more recently to better co-operation in some regions, although it is debatable to what extent cooperative approaches are desirable. In this introduction to the special section on the relationships between protected areas and sustainable forest management, we …
Indigenous-based Approaches to Territorial Conservation
Wolf Lake First Nation (WLFN), a community within the Algonquin Nation of Canada, has struggled with issues of self-determination and economic development that all First Nations across Canada have experienced. WLFN, with other First Nations in Canada, is advocating for the United Nation Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) as a framework for advancing their rights, dignity, survival, security, and well-being. In keeping with t…
Conservancies in Coastal British Columbia
In British Columbia (BC), Canada, the provincial government and First Nations have recently created an innovative new form of collaboratively managed protected area. Designated as 'Conservancies' under the BC Park Act or the Protected Areas of British Columbia Act, these protected areas are intended to provide a variety of sustainable uses, while maintaining biodiversity and recreational values and prohibiting large-scale commercial or industrial…
Value seeking, price sensitive, or green? Analyzing preference heterogeneity among residential energy consumers in Denmark
Evaluating the Ability of Specialization Indicators to Explain Fishing Preferences
Understanding the predictive ability of recreation specialization to explain behavior is important for wildlife and fisheries management given the widespread use of specialization to capture diversity among outdoor recreationists. Using allocation of days among fishing opportunities in a discrete choice experiment, we studied the extent that specialization predicted preferences for attributes describing the opportunities. Latent class modeling re…
Managing cross-country skiing destinations under the conditions of climate change – Scenarios for destinations in Austria and Finland
Hearing Voices from the Silent Majority
We used stated-preference choice models to examine Ontario anglers' preferred outcomes from fish stocking of Lake Huron and variations in these preferences between a random and a convenience sample. Anglers preferred outcomes that decreased risks of fish stock collapses and increased native prey fish species, average fish size, and species abundance especially for walleye (Sander vitreus) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Anglers from a co…

Trend Analysis of Motivation-Based Clusters at the Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site of Canada
This study combines data from three cross-sectional surveys (1993, 1998, and 2004) to explore how hikers at the Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site of Canada were affected by the introduction of several restrictive management policies. The analysis revolves around motivation-based segments defined via one single principal component and cluster analysis over all three years of data. The results document similarities and differences between the t…

Would You Displace? It Depends! A Multivariate Visual Approach to Intended Displacement from an Urban Forest Trail
A dichotomous choice survey was applied to explore the contributions of various social conditions to intended displacement from the main trail of a recreation area in Vienna, Austria. The trail scenarios were depicted as digitally calibrated images which systematically displayed combinations of levels of crowding with different mixes of user types, group sizes, compliance behavior, direction of movement, and placement within the image. Intended d…
A Comparison of Global and Actual Measures of Perceived Crowding of Urban Forest Visitors
Differences between global and actual measures of perceived crowding are investigated in an intra-individual analysis of 773 on-site visitors to an urban forest by comparing the two concepts for daily and hourly measurements. A sample of current and long-term visitor counts, measured in daily and hourly units, is added for reference points, allowing the investigation of the effects of visitor characteristics and additional situational factors on …

Understanding the Fish Harvesting Decisions by Anglers
This paper examined whether angling catch behaviors, angler characteristics, and angler evaluations could explain the decisions by anglers to harvest caught fish. Particularly, we determined if the propensity of tourist anglers to harvest caught walleye ( Stizostedion vitreum ), northern pike ( Esox lucius ), and smallmouth bass ( Micropterus Dolomieui ) was related to variables that measured catch rates, angling effort, catch rates for substitut…

Post‐flood assessment of emergency evacuation policies in the Red River basin, Southern Manitoba
A discrete choice experiment (DCE) was used as a part of a post‐flood survey among the residents of four small urban communities on the Red River ‐ Emerson, Morris, Ste. Agathe, and St. Adolphe ‐ to assess their preferences for emergency evacuation policies. The respondents were asked to choose repeatedly among three hypothetical evacuation policies described in terms of (a) the type of evacuation (mandatory, voluntary, no evacuation), (b) notifi…

A model of tourist choices of hypothetical Caribbean destinations
An experimental method is described for analyzing the preferences of winter beach vacationers for various destination attributes. Choice alternatives are created in a fractional factorial design consisting of 10 variables, each of which is defined on three levels. The variables describe characteristics of the accommodation, the distance of relevant tourist facilities from the accommodation and price. A second design combines five alternatives at …
