Quaternary research in Spain: Environmental changes and human footprint
Tribute to Lydia Zapata
Quaternary of the Western Pyrenean region: Multidisciplinary Research
Discovery of copy number variants by multiplex amplifiable probe hybridization (Maph) in candidate pigmentation genes
Although the functional role of these structural variants in pigmentation should be the subject of future work, the results emphasize the need to consider all classes of variation (both SNPs and CNVs) when exploring the genetics of skin pigmentation
Insights into the “isolation” of the Basques: MtDNA lineages from the historical site of Aldaieta (6th–7th centuries AD)
We analyzed the hypervariable region I (HVR‐I) sequence variability of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of individuals buried at Aldaieta (6th–7th centuries AD) in order to find out more about the biosocial implications of this cemetery. The results, fully authenticated by means of diverse criteria (analysis of duplicates, replication in an independent laboratory, quantification of target DNA, and sequencing and cloning of polymerase chain reaction …
Rare Haplotypes in mtDNA: Applications in the Analysis of Biosocial Aspects of Past Human Populations
We report on the use of rare mutations to tackle biosocial questions such as kinship and differential burial practices from past human populations. To do this, we have inferred nucleotide position 73 of HVS-II in individuals classified as belonging to haplogroup H from 76 human dental samples from the necropolis of Aldaieta (Basque Country, Spain, 6th-7th century) by means of PCR and restriction enzyme tests. The same analysis has been performed …
DNA Analysis and the Evolutionary History of the Basque Population: A Review
The effort to decode the human genome has resulted in the development of both new markers and analytical techniques of great anthropogenetic interest. These have replaced the so-called classical markers (ABO, Rh, etc.) in reconstructing the evolutionary history of human populations. Here we review critically the era of classical markers and report on the main contributions to date of the new DNA polymorphisms in elucidating the evolutionary histo…
Reconstruction of Diet with Trace Elements of Bone at the Chalcolithic Site of Pico Ramos, Basque Country, Spain
Molar crown height as a means of evaluating existing dental wear scales for estimating age at death in human skeletal remains
