  • CSR officers as heterodox brokers in Kanaky New Caledonia

Open Access•Séverine Bouard, Valentine Boudjema et al.•ARTICLE•The Australian Journal of…•2026

Nickel extraction and processing have profoundly shaped Kanaky New Caledonia's social, political and colonial/decolonial trajectory over the past 150 years. This activity has transformed material and mental landscapes while generating intermediary officers whose roles evolved over time. Since the 2000s, the arrival of transnational corporations introduced ‘travelling models’, such as impact and benefit agreements (IBA), corporate social responsib…

  • Mining and Indigenous Livelihoods

Open Access•Thierry Rodon, Sophie Thériault et al.•BOOK•Mining and Indigenous Livelihoods•2024

This book maps the encounters between Indigenous Peoples and local communities with mining companies in various postcolonial contexts. Combining comparative and multidisciplinary analysis, the contributors to this volume shine a light on how the mining industry might adapt its practices to the political and legal contexts where they operate. Understanding these processes and how communities respond to these encounters is critical to documenting w…

This multi-authored chapter covers some statements and reflections on the geopolitical but also environmental, societal and economic futures in the aftermath of the third referendum in 2021 on political independence, and after the visit of French President Macron to New Caledonia-Kanaky in July 2023. While for the current French government, the future of the country lies within the French Republic, pro-independence parties see the decolonisation …

  • A mine for women? Trajectories of Kanak women in the nickel industry in New Caledonia

Open Access•Guillaume Vadot, Christine Demmer et al.•CHAPTER•Mining and Indigenous Livelihoods•2024

Based on the analysis of a sample of biographical trajectories, this article attempts to reconstruct the constraints experienced by Kanak women who join the nickel industry, and the strategies they use to enter and remain in the industry. During the 2010s, the nickel sector saw a rapid influx of Indigenous women, often into skilled positions. By cross-referencing the pathways taken by these employees, we shed light on this phenomenon by endeavori…

  • Can the Non-market Economy Help to Improve Diet Quality? Findings From a Survey in New Caledonia

Open Access•Cedric Gaillard, Séverine Bouard et al.•ARTICLE•Asia-Pacific Journal of Rural…•2024

The Pacific archipelago of New Caledonia is undergoing a nutritional transition that began several decades ago. In a political context dominated by questions of self-determination that reveal deep divisions, agriculture also mirrors this dichotomy, observed through the coexistence of traditional non-market agriculture primarily practiced on Kanak tribal reserves and so-called ‘modern’ and capitalistic, market-driven agriculture. Based on a survey…

  • Freshwater supply as sociotechnical tinkering

Open Access•Olga Peytavi, Séverine Bouard et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ecology•2023

This article aims to show that in-depth ethnography of processes and acts of sociotechnical tinkering provide a useful starting point for understanding how water knowledge co-creation works. This is even more relevant in countries with a strong legacy of settler colonization and continued power asymmetries between holders of different water-related knowledges and ontologies. Analyzing infrastructural and sociotechnical forms of tinkering helps un…

  • The geopolitical ecology of New Caledonia

Open Access•Matthias Kowasch, Séverine Bouard et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ecology•2020•Cited by: 1

In the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia, conflict and difference between Indigenous Kanak people and European settlers has existed at least since the 1850s. We interrogate the geopolitical ecology of these islands, which is deeply wedded to natural resource extraction, is instrumentalized in political debate, power struggles, conflict, and the mining sector. Territoriality, including changes to political borders and access to land, has p…

Policies designed for sustainable development are becoming ever more complex and ambiguous. Assessments should thus incorporate development representations and values, rather than only relying on economic and financial normative indicators. This paper proposes a conceptual framework that acknowledges the plurality of the various stakeholders' viewpoints. We suggest that evaluation of grassroots development policies could provide an innovative and…

Cette vision offre des outils d’analyse des stratégies des acteurs reposant sur la reconnaissance de l’enchâssement des relations économiques dans les relations sociales. L’analyse d’enquêtes réalisées auprè…
