Unlocking Urban Potential
This Survey highlights the role of urbanisation as a growth engine for Indonesia. With the country’s economy growing steadily, including by 5.11% in the first quarter of 2024, this Survey highlights the vital contribution of urban productivity to national income. Despite growth driven by non-tradable sectors and relatively strong consumption patterns due to Idul Fitri and general election events, urbanised areas face problems that hinder their pr…
The relationship between the built environment and respiratory health
Multiple studies have discussed the relationship between the built environment and non-infectious diseases, but research involving infectious diseases and the built environment is scarce. How the built environment is associated with infectious diseases varies across areas, and previous literature produces mixed results. This study investigated the relationship between the built environment and infectious diseases in Indonesia, which has different…

Spatial Sorting of Rich Versus Poor People in Jakarta
We test an adjusted version of the classic monocentric-city model to explain the spatial sorting of rich versus poor people in Jakarta. We find that in Jakarta (1) the urban rich tend to live in the city centre; (2) because of extreme congestion levels, the elasticity between income and the opportunity cost of time spent commuting is higher than the elasticity between income and demand for larger plots of residential land; and (3) the motorbike i…
Heterogeneous effects of visa exemption policy on international tourist arrivals
We examined the potential heterogeneous impact of implementing a series of visa exemption policies on foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia by exploiting a rich data set of monthly series of foreign tourist arrivals, by country and by port of entry between January 2014 and December 2018. This is the first study in providing empirical evidence of the heterogeneous impact of a country’s visa exemption policy across tourist’s origins and within-coun…
Information technology and local conflict
The positive effects of communication technology on the developmental process of a nation have been demonstrated in the literature. In this paper, we argue that communication technology may also have an adverse effect, by examining its impact on the presence of conflict. Using Indonesian subdistrict surveys from 2011 and 2014, we find that regions with stronger communication signals are more likely to experience conflict. The econometric estimate…
