  • Resolving the energy efficiency paradox

    Open Access•Fateh Belaïd, Mahelet G Fikru•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

This article examines the economics of energy efficiency in Saudi Arabia’s building sector, centering on the “energy efficiency paradox,” the observed under adoption of cost-effective technologies despite their clear benefits—such as reducing energy use and associated emissions. We show that a mix of market barriers and behavioral biases—including split incentives, informational gaps, and the value-action gap—constrains adoption of energy-efficie…

  • A strategic insight into the market for carbon management capacity

    Open Access•Mahelet G Fikru, Ting Shen et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Futures•2024

The market for carbon management capacity is conceptualized. • Carbon management has a supply and demand side. • Policies can encourage technology development and technology adoption. • Market and non-market forces can increase carbon management capacity. This study presents the market for carbon management capacity via carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies, identifying demand and supply forces, as well as clarifying the potential…

  • Trans-boundary Movement of Hazardous Waste

    Open Access•Mahelet G Fikru•ARTICLE•Review of European Studies•2012•Cited by: 2

The paper explores a new micro dataset on the export of hazardous waste generated in Europe. A total of 16 745 industrial facilities generated hazardous waste in 2009 out of which 1 272 exported some or all of the waste. A measure of the export intensity of facilities is introduced by using export of hazardous waste as a percentage of total hazardous waste generated. The study finds that 96% of the export stays within Europe and rarely goes to de…
