Correlation between Linguistic Measures: An Extended Analysis
In this paper we reconsider the results that appeared originally in Coloma (2017) about the possible existence of negative correlation between linguistic measures, using a newly-assembled database of 80 languages for which we have the same text (which is the fable known as “The North Wind and the Sun”). Most conclusions of the original paper become reinforced, especially the ones related to the existence of language complexity trade-offs. This is…
Argentine Spanish
Although Spanish is a relatively unified language, in the sense that people from very distant locations manage to understand each other well, there are several phonetic phenomena that distinguish geographically separated varieties. The total number of native speakers of Spanish is above 400 million, and roughly 10% of them live in Argentina (Instituto Cervantes 2014). The accent described below corresponds to formal Spanish spoken in Buenos Aires…

An Econometric method to detect the social significance of linguistic variables
This paper proposes a quantitative method, drawn from the field of economic statistics (also known as “econometrics”), to detect the social significance of certain linguistic variables. It uses leastsquare regression analysis to find the relationship between the income of the individuals from a population and several linguistic characteristics of those individuals. As a result, we obtain “hedonic prices”, that indicate whether those characteristi…
