Influence of Problem Composition, Positional Cues, and past Instances on Conceptual Learning
All subjects received a group of problems (traditional) which could be solved using a reference rule of conjunction or disjunction, and another group of problems (intradimensional) which could be solved either by one of the reference rules or by a structurally simpler rule. Analysis confirmed that adults were not only adept at solving on the basis of the simpler rule but that, when they did so, it led to no differences in performance between conj…
The Influence of Formal Education on Rule Learning and Attribute Identification in a West African Society
Groups of formally educated and of uneducated rural Kpelle tribesmen and children of Liberia, West Africa were given rule learning and attribute identification problems. On a wide variety of measures, rule learning proved easier than attribute identification for a conjunctive rule but not for a disjunctive rule. Education proved to have no significant effect on rule learning for either a conjunctive or a disjunctive rule. The influence of formal …
Biconditional Rule-Difficulty
Three different groups of college age Ss received biconditional rule-learning problems that were altered in such a way as to permit a direct test of an unpublished model of Ss' behavior proposed by C. K. Sawyer and P. Johnson and substantially extended by Salatas and Bourne (1972). The present experiment obtained strong support for the model and evidence to support the widely reported suggestion that the principal difficulty with a biconditional …
Nonstandard English and Free Recall
Two groups of schoolchildren were presented stories which contained embedded items that were later tested for recall. One group of children was judged to possess competent verbal skills in standard English and extremely marginal (if any) verbal skills in Hawaiian Islands dialect. A second group of children was judged to possess competent verbal skills in Hawaiian Islands dialect but with only marginal verbal skills in standard English. An unusual…
Words and Concepts
To investigate the relation between words and concepts conjunctive and disjunctive problems were generated from lists of adjectives and nouns. Half of the Ss were given a strong aid to memory by giving them a continuous record of all past concept instances. All Ss were required to describe the basis for their choices following each problem. Conjunctive performance proved superior to disjunctive performance both in terms of errors committed and th…
