  • Common Core State Standards and Adaptive Teaching

    Michael L Kamil•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 15

This article examines the issues of how Common Core State Standards (CCSS) will impact adaptive teaching. It focuses on 2 of the major differences between conventional standards and CCSS: the increased complexity of text and the addition of disciplinary literacy standards to reading instruction. The article argues that adaptive teaching under CCSS requires adaptations of teachers, as well as adaptation to student responses. These phenomena are pa…

  • Vocabulary assessment

    Open Access•P David Pearson, Elfrieda H Hiebert et al.•ARTICLE•Reading Research Quarterly•2007•Cited by: 23•References: 10

The authors assert that, in order to teach vocabulary more effectively and better understand its relation to comprehension, we need first to address how vocabulary knowledge and growth are assessed. They argue that “vocabularly assessment is grossly undernourished, both in its theoretical and practical aspects—that it has been driven by tradition, convenience, psychometric standards, and a quest for economy of effort rather than a clear conceptua…

  • The Practicality and Efficiency of Web‐Based Placement Testing for College‐Level Language Programs

    Open Access•Elizabeth B Bernhardt, Raymond J Rivera et al.•ARTICLE•Foreign Language Annals•2004•Cited by: 4•References: 21

Articulation is one of the principal challenges of all foreign language programs. A key component of the articulation process is an assessment of student language abilities. On college and university campuses this process is usually conducted via a placement test. As developments in proficiency research have progressed, it is clear that programs need information about a student's grammatical command of a language as well as about their integrativ…

  • Cloze as a Measure of Intersentential Comprehension

Timothy Shanahan, Michael L Kamil et al.•ARTICLE•Reading Research Quarterly•1982•Cited by: 10

CLOZE TESTS ARE FREQUENTLY USED to measure reading comprehension. Although cloze is generally accepted as a global measure of reading comprehension, and cloze test results are reportedly well correlated with those of traditional comprehension tests, the question of which specific components of reading comprehension are measured by cloze tests has not been adequately explored. This study assessed the sensitivity of cloze passages as measures of th…

  • How Integrated is Memory for Semantically Related Sentences

E Schultz, E Eugene Schultz et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1979

Theorists currently question the interpretation of effects which Bransford and Franks claim are indicants of holistic representational structures. Background stories and/or topically blocked presentations were given to 80 male and female undergraduates whose task was to recall semantically related sentences. Stories and blocked presentation facilitated recall and topical clustering. Measures of semantic integration developed by Bransford and Fran…
