Orality as a factor in interpersonal yielding
Autonomic arousal, interpersonal climate, and orality
Electrodermal responses in male subjects who gave at least four oral-dependent Rorschach responses (n = 15) or no more than two such responses (n = 19) were assessed both before and after the subjects had either a warm, friendly interaction or a cold, unfriendly interaction with a confederate. There were no group differences on initial baseline measurements. Following a 10-minute warm or cold interaction, there was significant three-way interacti…
Oral imagery and autonomic arousal in social isolation
Psychoanalytic theory suggests that the presence of others reduces anxiety in those with oral-dependent needs. Electrodermal activity of male subjects high and low on Rorschach oral-dependent responses was monitored in one of three conditions while the subject was in a soundproof chamber for 40 minutes: alone with no task; alone working on a clerical task; and together with a male confederate, both working independently on the clerical task. Oral…
Oral imagery, accuracy of perceiving others, and performance in Peace Corps training
Psychoanalytic theory suggests that people with oral characteristics should be dependent on others and should develop skills in predicting responses of others. Using previously unacquainted students, experimenters found that males who reported many oral images were better than low-oral males at predicting male personality test responses. Orality was unrelated to accurate perception by males of females or to accuracy of females' interpersonal perc…
Mental Illness in Lower Class Normal, Obese and Hyperobese Women
Forty-eight white women from the lower socioeconomic class were interviewed. They were attending clinics at a county hospital because of problems other than obesity or psychiatric illness. Their weights ranged from normal to hyperobese. A semistructured interview, Spitzer's Mental Status Schedule, was held and a specialized medical history elicited information on eating habits. Three groups were formed: normal weight (mean 121 lb), obese (mean 18…

Birth Order and the Need for Affiliation
Three samples of students were used to test two hypotheses derived from Schachter's work on birth order and the need for affiliation. No relationship was found in either male or female freshmen between birth order and preference for rooming alone or rooming with others. No relationship was found between birth order and choice of group or individual athletic activity. It was suggested that the situational factors must be considered in understandin…
Changes in motives as a result of teaching
The authors have delineated ten unconscious motives that operate in the choice of a teaching career. When these motives are examined in terms of certain criteria, some significant implications for teaching emerge. Mr. Masling and Mr. Stern are professors of psychology at Syracuse University
