Research Methods in Translation and Interpreting Studies
Translation and interpreting studies is an interdisciplinary area of scholarly inquiry that has relied on a wide range of methodological approaches over the course of its development and evolution into an independent discipline. Early methods focused on linguistic and textual comparisons of the translated product or the interpreted rendition. Corpus‐based methods grew in popularity along with greater interest in research on the cognitive processe…
Investigating the impact of personalized headnotes for English-speaking audiences in viewing Chinese comedies
This article explores the use of personalized headnotes (PHNs) to enhance the viewing experience of English-speaking audiences watching subtitled Chinese comedies. Based on personalization and relevance theory, this study employs eye-tracking, questionnaires, and interviews to assess the impact of PHNs on audience reception. Findings suggest that while PHNs enhance comprehension of cultural references, their effect on humor appreciation varies wi…
Human-Centered augmented translation: Against antagonistic dualisms
Industry commentators have recently proposed the concept of ‘augmented translation’. Drawing on the notions of ‘antagonistic dualisms’ and ‘human-centered artificial intelligence’ (HCAI), this paper considers various definitions of ‘augmentation’ from an augmented cognition standpoint including definitions focussing on problem-solving, interdisciplinary field theories, and cognition supported by sensing technologies and AI. It is suggested that t…

The Language Engineer: A Transversal, Emerging Role for the Automation Age
This paper analyses the role of translators in a rapidly changing industry, which is strongly marked by digitalization and automation, and suggests the skills and competences translators will need to embrace to succeed in some branches of the industry of the (not-so distant) future. This research is based on an in-depth review of language-related positions in the current job market, as well as on recent survey-based research that sought to unders…
Onomatopoeia: A relevance-based eye-tracking study of digital manga
This study is concerned with the reception of onomatopoeia in the English translation of digital manga. In manga, onomatopoeia is often presented as part of the aesthetics, being both verbal (meaning) and non-verbal (showing) simultaneously.Drawing on the relevance-theoretic notion of a showing-saying continuum (Sperber and Wilson 1995), this study aims to identify factors that affect reading behaviour including the translation strategies and the …
Animating Box 331
Animating Box 331 Jean M. O'Brien (bio) COLLABORATION is much more than coauthorship. The collaboration at the heart of Rachel Wheeler and Sarah Eyerly's "Singing Box 331: Re-sounding Eighteenth-Century Mohican Hymns from the Moravian Archives" is particularly multifaceted, bringing together expertise in early American/mission history (Wheeler), the history of music (Eyerly), Mohican linguistics (Christopher Harvey), and music performance (Florid…
Crisis translation: Considering language needs in multilingual disaster settings
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to highlight the role that language translation can play in disaster prevention and management and to make the case for increased attention to language translation in crisis communication. Design/methodology/approach The paper draws on literature relating to disaster management to suggest that translation is a perennial issue in crisis communication. Findings Although communication with multicultural and multi…
A reception study of machine translated subtitles for Moocs
As access has grown to online courses in the form of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), the language barrier has become an important issue for users worldwide. Machine translation (MT) appears to offer an alternative or complementary solution to existing forms of MOOC translation. Very little attention has been paid, however, to the use and utility of MT for MOOC content. The main goal of this research is to test the impact machine-translated s…
Resistance and accommodation: Factors for the (non-) adoption of machine translation among professional translators
Despite considerable advances in machine translation (MT), adoption by professional translators still meets with resistance. Research on the human factors associated with MT (non-)adoption is required to understand this state of affairs. We investigate whether two specific groups of professional translators use MT, what reasons they advance for its use/non-use and what factors might explain the reasons given. Participants advanced an equally dive…
Language, culture, and translation in disaster ICT: An ecosystemic model of understanding
This paper examines how the roles of language, culture, and translation could be modelled within a framework of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) used in disasters. It is based on empirical data drawn from a case study of foreign nationals resident in Japan for the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The case study revealed that the ICT used in the 2011 disaster was diverse; that interesting relationships existed between the forms …
Research Methodologies in Translation Studies
As an interdisciplinary area of research, translation studies attracts students and scholars with a wide range of backgrounds, who then need to face the challenge of accounting for a complex object of enquiry that does not adapt itself well to traditional methods in other fields of investigation. This book addresses the needs of such scholars – whether they are students doing research at postgraduate level or more experienced researchers who want…

A virtuous circle: Laundering translation memory data using statistical machine translation
This study compares consistency in target texts produced using translation memory (TM) with that of target texts produced using statistical machine translation (SMT), where the SMT engine is trained on the same texts as are reused in the TM workflow. These comparisons focus specifically on noun and verb inconsistencies, as such inconsistencies appear to be highly prevalent in TM data. The study substitutes inconsistent TM target text nouns and ve…

Eye‐tracking and Translation Memory Matches
Eye‐tracking has been used as a methodology for some time in various disciplines, but it has not been applied to date in translation studies. This paper presents results from a preliminary investigation which seeks to answer two questions: Firstly, is eye‐tracking, in general, a useful research methodology for investigating translators' interaction with Translation Memory tools? Secondly, what can eye-tracking data tell us about cognitive load wh…
Pauses as Indicators of Cognitive Effort in Post-editing Machine Translation Output
In translation process and language production research, pauses are seen as indicators of cognitive processing. Investigating the correlations between source text machine translatability and post-editing effort involves an assessment of cognitive effort. Therefore, an analysis of pauses is essential. This paper presents data from a research project which includes an analysis of pauses in post-editing, triangulated with the Choice Network Analysis…
