  • Intergroup contact and the potential for post-conflict reconciliation

Linda R Tropp, Diala R Hawi et al.•ARTICLE•Peace and Conflict Journal of…•2017•Cited by: 16•References: 7

With surveys of Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland, and Whites and Blacks in South Africa, this research examines how both contact quality and exposure to intergroup conflict predict attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors relevant to intergroup reconciliation. Across both studies, contact of higher quality predicted more positive intergroup attitudes, trust, more positive perceptions of outgroup intentions in working toward peace, and great…

  • Gender Stereotypes of Personality

    Open Access•Corinna E Löckenhoff, Wayne Chan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2014•Cited by: 18•References: 49

Numerous studies have documented subtle but consistent sex differences in self-reports and observer-ratings of five-factor personality traits, and such effects were found to show well-defined developmental trajectories and remarkable similarity across nations. In contrast, very little is known about perceived gender differences in five-factor traits in spite of their potential implications for gender biases at the interpersonal and societal level…

  • The inaccuracy of national character stereotypes

Open Access•Robert R Mccrae, Wayne Chan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Personality•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 52

  • Combating the mental health stigma with nostalgia

    Open Access•Richard N Turner, Rhiannon N Turner et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2013•Cited by: 9•References: 43

We report research implicating nostalgia as an intrapersonal means of warding off the stigmatization of persons with mental illness. We hypothesized and found that nostalgia about an encounter with a person with mental illness improves attitudes toward the mentally ill. In Experiment 1, undergraduates who recalled an encounter with a mentally ill person while focusing on central (vs. peripheral) features of the nostalgia prototype reported a more…

  • Contextualism as an Important Facet of Individualism-Collectivism

    Open Access•Ellinor Owe, Vivian L Vignoles et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 59

Beliefs about personhood are understood to be a defining feature of individualism-collectivism (I-C), but they have been insufficiently explored, given the emphasis of research on values and self-construals. We propose the construct of contextualism, referring to beliefs about the importance of context in understanding people, as a facet of cultural collectivism. A brief measure was developed and refined across 19 nations (Study 1: N = 5,241), sh…

  • Stereotypes of age differences in personality traits

Wayne Chan, Robert R Mccrae et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2012•Cited by: 12

Age trajectories for personality traits are known to be similar across cultures. To address whether stereotypes of age groups reflect these age-related changes in personality, we asked participants in 26 countries (N = 3,323) to rate typical adolescents, adults, and old persons in their own country. Raters across nations tended to share similar beliefs about different age groups; adolescents were seen as impulsive, rebellious, undisciplined, pref…

  • Cultural Threat and Anti‐immigrant Prejudice

    Open Access•Samuel Pehrson, Mirona Gheorghiu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community & Applied…•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 13

Cultural threat has emerged as a consistent predictor of anti‐immigrant and anti‐minority attitudes across many different national contexts. We examine this issue in the context of Northern Ireland using representative survey data, suggesting that Protestant and unionist communities experience a higher level of cultural threat than Catholic and nationalist communities on account of the ‘parity of esteem’ principle that has informed changes in the…

  • Perceptions of aging across 26 cultures and their culture-level associates.

Corinna E Löckenhoff, Filip De Fruyt et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology and Aging•2009

College students (N=3,435) in 26 cultures reported their perceptions of age-related changes in physical, cognitive, and socioemotional areas of functioning and rated societal views of aging within their culture. There was widespread cross-cultural consensus regarding the expected direction of aging trajectories with (a) perceived declines in societal views of aging, physical attractiveness, the ability to perform everyday tasks, and new learning;…

  • Beyond the United States and Japan

    Open Access•Mirona Gheorghiu, Mirona A Gheorghiu et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•2009•Cited by: 28•References: 41

We examined the relationship between Individualism/Collectivism and generalized social trust across 31 European nations participating in the European Social Survey. Using multilevel regression analyses, the current study provides the first empirical investigation of the effects of cultural norms of Individualism/Collectivism on generalized social trust while accounting for individuals' own cultural orientations within the same analysis. The resul…
