  • Mind-wandering facilitates creative performance in a musical improvisation task

Open Access•Pedro T Palhares, Diogo Branco et al.•ARTICLE•Consciousness and Cognition•2026

Novel experience sampling approach linked mental states to ongoing creative performance. • Fine-grained mental state classification revealed distinct functional outcomes within on-task and off-task states. • Mind-wandering associated with increased musical creativity, compared to task-focused attention. • Task-related interference associated with decreased creativity; mind-blanking was neutral. • Expertise moderated mind-wandering effects: benefi…

  • Mind wandering and musical creativity in jazz improvisation

Open Access•Pedro T Palhares, Diogo Branco et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Music•2022

Mind wandering is a prevalent and ubiquitous phenomenon. Several studies suggest that mind wandering benefits creativity if it occurs in the incubation period of a creative problem-solving task. However, it could be impairing real-time expression of creative behavior if it occurs during the course of a creative task. This dissociation between incubation and performance suggests that mind wandering poses a double-edged sword to creative cognition.…

  • Revisiting consciousness: Distinguishing between states of conscious focused attention and mind wandering with EEG

Open Access•M R Dias da Silva, Óscar F Gonçalves et al.•ARTICLE•Consciousness and Cognition•2022

Fluctuating between external conscious processing and mind wandering is inherent to the human condition. Past research showed that in tasks requiring sustained attention, mind wandering episodes in which attention is directed internally constrain conscious processing of external stimuli. Conversely, conscious processing of internal stimuli is enhanced during mind wandering. To investigate this, we developed and administered a visuomotor tracking …

  • Cortical auditory evoked potentials in 1‐month‐old infants predict language outcomes at 12 months

Open Access•Samantha Cruz, Alberto Crego et al.•ARTICLE•Infancy•2022

The neurophysiological assessment of infants in their first developmental year can provide important information about the functional changes of the brain and supports the study of behavioral and developmental characteristics. Infants’ cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) reflect cortical maturation and appear to predict subsequent language abilities. This study aimed to identify CAEP components to two auditory stimulus intensities in 1‐mo…

  • Callous-Unemotional Traits Moderate Anticipated Guilt and Wrongness Judgments to Everyday Moral Transgressions in Adolescents

Open Access•Margarida Angélica da Silva Vasconcelos, Margarida Vasconcelos et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits observed during childhood and adolescence are thought to be precursors of psychopathic traits in adulthood. Adults with high levels of psychopathic traits typically present antisocial behavior. Such behavior can be indicative of atypical moral processing. Evidence suggests that moral dysfunction in these individuals may stem from a disruption of affective components of moral processing rather than from an inability…

  • Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation as an Add-on Treatment to Cognitive-Behavior Therapy in First Episode Drug-Naïve Major Depression Patients: The Esap Study Protocol

Open Access•Sandra Carvalho, Óscar F Gonçalves et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Background: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) affects more than 264 million people worldwide. Current treatments include the use of psychotherapy and/or drugs, however ~30% of patients either do not respond to these treatments, or do not tolerate the side effects associated to the use of pharmacological interventions. Thus, it is important to study non-pharmacological interventions targeting mechanisms not directly involved with the regulation of n…

  • Increased Nucleus Accumbens Volume in College Binge Drinkers - Preliminary Evidence From Manually Segmented MRI Analysis

Open Access•Sónia S Sousa, Adriana Sampaio et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

These findings are in line with previous automatically segmented MRI reports highlighting abnormalities in a key region involved in drug rewarding processes in BDs

  • Measuring Vulnerability to Anxiety: Factorial Structure, Reliability, Validity, and Discriminatory Accuracy of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index–3–PT

    Ana Ganho-Ávila, Mariana Moura‐Ramos et al.•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•2019•References: 3

We evaluated the Portuguese version of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index 3 (ASI–3–PT). Results of a confirmatory factor analysis (N = 603; 65.3% women, M age = 28.55, SD = 10.42) confirmed multidimensionality of the construct and the receiver operating characteristic confirmed the discriminant capacity of the measure between clinical and nonclinical samples

  • Vagal modulation of 1‐month‐old infants to auditory stimuli is associated with self‐regulatory behavior

    Open Access•Samantha Cruz, Fernando Ferreira‐Santos et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2017•References: 2

During infancy, cardiac vagal modulation has been associated with attentional and social engagement behaviors. While studies have shown that infants display a behavioral repertoire that enables them to interact with others by being able to regulate themselves in order to attend to and to discriminate emotional and social cues, vagal modulation to sensory stimuli and its association with behavioral outcomes at early ages remains to be addressed. I…

Open Access•Alice M Bastos, Carolina Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Psicologia•2014

  • Biological and physiological markers of tactile sensorial processing in healthy newborns

    Open Access•Maria Góis‐Eanes, Óscar F Gonçalves et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•2012•References: 37

The main objective of this review is to provide a descriptive analysis of the biological and physiological markers of tactile sensorial processing in healthy, full‐term newborns. Research articles were selected according to the following study design criteria: (a) tactile stimulation for touch sense as an independent variable; (b) having at least one biological or physiological variable as a dependent variable; and (c) the group of participants w…

  • Toward a Developmental Counseling Curriculum

    Open Access•Allen E Ivey, Óscar F Gonçalves•ARTICLE•Counselor Education and Supervision•1987•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Extensive attention has been given by ACES and AACD to the unique role of the counseling profession. It is suggested that the definition of the profession lies in the association name: American Association for Counseling and Development. Counselors must integrate developmental theory systematically into the practice of counseling. Several alternative developmental models are summarized in this article, along with their implications for the future…
