  • Practitioner Review

Open Access•Jessica E Opie, Everett Waters et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2026

Attachment theory, with its core concepts, perspectives, and insights developed over the past five decades, is influential for professionals working with young children. However, practitioners face challenges translating attachment theory and research into practical applications. This manifests in attachment myths, theoretical misinterpretations, and inconsistency of application. This state‐of‐the‐art review is authored by 47 attachment researche…

  • Burnout and moral injuries after foreign deployment among medical personnel of the German armed forces

Open Access•Franziska Langner, Anna Katharina Börke et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

The results indicate that medical service soldiers exhibit mild to moderate burnout symptoms even before deployment. Significant associations between moral injuries and burnout were found in 3 out of 4 MBI subscales (EE, DP, INV). There was a significant association with a stronger moral injury and higher burnout levels, persisting both before and after the study period. Furthermore, our results suggest that personal value orientations might be m…

  • Theory of mind and emotion regulation in school‐aged children

    Open Access•Plousia Misailidi, Peter Zimmermann et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2024•References: 4

Children's theory of mind (ToM) and emotion regulation (ER) have been associated with various parental factors. This study examined associations between ToM, ER, and dimensions of parental reflective functioning (RF) in children aged 7 to 12 years. A total of 95 children ( M = 8.85 years, 51 girls, and 44 boys) and their mothers took part in the study. Children completed two higher‐order ToM tasks and mothers rated their own RF and children's ToM…

  • Epidemiological Analysis of the Emergency Vascular Access in Pediatric Trauma Patients

Open Access•Manuel F Struck, Franziska Rost et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Vascular access in severely injured pediatric trauma patients is associated with time-critical circumstances and low incidences, whereas only scarce literature on procedure performance is available. The purpose of this study was to analyze the performance of different vascular access procedures from the first contact at the scene until three hours after admission. Intubated pediatric trauma patients admitted from the scene to a single Level I tra…

  • Management of Children and Adolescents with Chest Trauma in Pediatric and Non-Pediatric Departments—A Claims Data Analysis

Open Access•Peter Zimmermann, Sharon Kraemer et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Children and adolescents with chest trauma are treated almost equally often in pediatric and adult departments. CT is significantly less frequently used in pediatric departments. Patients with a chest drain treated at a UM showed more concomitant injuries without a longer hospital stay. However, the clinical validity of this finding is questionable

  • The impact of the pandemic on the perception of stress and danger, and the adjustment of psychiatric and general medical staff of German military hospitals

    Open Access•Gerd Willmund, Gerd-Dieter Willmund et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

The presented results must be interpreted while taking the unique situations of German military clinics into account. The supply of protective material was sufficient and there was no dramatic shortage of psychiatric staff during the pandemic. The inpatients were quite often (40%) elective treatments for trauma-related disorders, which could be discontinued in the case of a COVID-19 infection. The results of this study showed good adaptative skil…

  • Traumatized German soldiers with moral injury – value-based cognitive-behavioral group therapy to treat war-related shame

Open Access•Caroline Diekmann, Leonie Ißels et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

This study suggests that the special therapeutic focus in cognitive-behavioral group therapy can alter shame-based maladaptive coping behaviors in response to war-related moral injury. This study provides further evidence that therapeutic approaches - through fostering a reconciliatory, compassionate, and forgiving approach toward oneself and others - target the underlying mechanisms of moral injury. Therefore, value-based cognitive-behavioral in…

  • Tracheal Tube Misplacement after Emergency Intubation in Pediatric Trauma Patients

Open Access•Franziska Rost, Bernd Donaubauer et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

Inadvertent tracheal tube misplacement and particularly endobronchial intubation are well-known complications of emergency endotracheal intubation (ETI) in pediatric trauma patients, which require repositioning of the tube to avoid impairment of gas exchange. The main aim of study was to identify the frequency of tube misplacement and associated factors of pediatric trauma patients who received ETI either by prehospital physician-staffed emergenc…

  • Family risk and early attachment development

    Open Access•Jennifer Gerlach, Judith M Fößel et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 65

Family risks are known to be detrimental to children's attachment development. This study investigated whether parental sensitivity plays different roles in early attachment development in the context of risk: Sensitivity was hypothesized to mediate risk effects on attachment, as well as a moderator that shapes the relation between risk and attachment. Multiple family risks, parental sensitivity (defined as responsivity and supportive presence), …

  • Still Mother after All These Years

    Open Access•Peter Zimmermann, Laura Elise Mühling et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 57

Fathering and mothering have changed in many ways within the last decades. Earlier studies showed a clear hierarchy in infant attachment figures with a preference for mothers. This study examined whether infants in the 21st century still prefer mothers over fathers in their expression of attachment behaviors, whether differences in parental involvement still exist, and whether this will result in differences in attachment security to mother and f…

  • Do ideal fathers differ from ideal mothers? A study on sensitivity, challenging, and sensitive challenging parenting behavior

Open Access•Alexandra Iwanski, Laura Mühling et al.•ARTICLE•Psicologia•2022

Studies on caregiving often distinguish between sensitive and challenging behavior. Mothers are characterized as more sensitive and fathers as more challenging. From an attachment perspective, the ideal mother is sensitive. Empirically, sensitivity is a better predictor of child-mother compared to child-father attachment security. In contrast, sensitive challenging behavior is a better predictor of child-father attachment. Thus, the ideal father …

  • Emotion regulation from early adolescence to emerging adulthood and middle adulthood

    Open Access•Peter Zimmermann, Alexandra Iwanski•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

Despite the growing research on emotion regulation, the empirical evidence for normative age-related emotion regulation patterns is rather divergent. From a life-span perspective, normative age changes in emotion regulation may be more salient applying the same methodological approach on a broad age range examining both growth and decline during development. In addition, emotion-specific developmental patterns might show differential developmenta…
