  • Cycles of general war in world history

    Matthew Melko•ARTICLE•International Interactions•1999•References: 7

Scholars who have studied general war tend to agree that there is at least a rough cycle to be discerned. A general war ends with the establishment of a hegemonic power that plays a major role in reducing conflict within the international system. Eventually the hegemon is challenged by a rising power and this challenge leads to another general war in which either the hegemon defends its position, the rising power replaces it, or a third power rep…

  • Long-term Factors Underlying Peace in Contemporary Western Civilization

    Open Access•Matthew Melko•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The absence of war within Western Civilization since World War II may not be the result of nuclear deterrence. It may be that nuclear weapons have not been used because of structural factors that are responsible for the peace. Measured in several ways, the present period looks as though it may be the most peaceful one in the past quarter millennium, probably the most peaceful in modern Western history. The factors behind this peace may have to do…

  • What Effect Do I Have

    Matthew Melko•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•1987

Let us assume that we can measure the progress of our students with tests we develop. We give quizzes to see if students have mastered data, techniques, writing skills, or developed problemsolving capacities. We score the results excellent, good, fair, or poor. If the results are poor, we assume that we have to give more stress to a particular area. By the response we get, we have an indication of the short-term effects of our

Edward L Kain, Leonard Cargan et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1984

Most people, on learning that someone is unmarried, assume that it is not by choice. Unmarried women, particularly, are seen as being incompetent or unattractive. Marriage, in an economy dominated by males, is still seen as a form of success, while a single woman is regarded as a failure. Single men are often seen as being immature, selfish, tied to mother, or deeply inadequate. The authors of this book compare singles with marrieds to separate m…
